Foster care helped Abraxas, a dog who arrived at an L.A. County shelter frightened and in poor physical condition, gradually become more comfortable with people, dogs, and everyday life. Best Friends Animal Society’s account says that after time in foster homes and at its Los Angeles pet adoption center, Abraxas was adopted into a home of his own.
How Abraxas arrived at the shelter
In a story published January 26, 2026, Best Friends Animal Society says Abraxas’s first three years are largely unknown. When he arrived at an L.A. County shelter, he was covered in fleas, had mange, and wore a collar that had become embedded in his neck. Best Friends describes him as terrified and shut down; the shelter contacted the organization so he could receive medical and emotional care. Read Best Friends’ account of Abraxas.
How he began to gain confidence
At Best Friends’ Los Angeles pet adoption center, loud noises overwhelmed Abraxas, and he was shy around people and other dogs. Staff saw signs that he wanted to connect, but needed time and nurturing. Walks and playgroup sessions helped him become more confident.
What foster homes gave Abraxas
Abraxas stayed in several foster homes. In those homes, he could decompress, spend time with resident dogs, and experience family life. His foster caregivers took him on outings to parks, the beach, and hiking trails, and offered toys and activities to keep his mind engaged.

Best Friends says that in foster care, Abraxas began snuggling with people and became comfortable being petted. The organization describes him as gentle, sweet, playful, and goofy. Its account sums up the change this way: “A foster home can change a pet’s life. It did for Abraxas.”
Abraxas’s reported outcome
After returning to the adoption center, Abraxas charmed an adopter. Best Friends reports that he now lives in a home of his own. This is one dog’s story, not a promise that every dog will respond to foster care in the same way.

What Best Friends means by no-kill
