Polly Pocket began exploring her foster home by moving backward. With foster care, proper nourishment, veterinary assessment and gentle play, the tiny puppy gained strength and began moving forward to chase a cat wand toy, according to Best Friends Animal Society. The organization’s story describes a change in her movement—not a toy-based treatment or a confirmed diagnosis.

Why Polly moved backward

Best Friends Animal Society’s story, written by Cayla Cavalletto and published January 21, 2026, follows Polly at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. She arrived malnourished, weighing just over two pounds—about one-third the size of her siblings—and went straight into foster care with Best Friends staff member Jessica Harrington.

Harrington recalled, “From the beginning, I noticed she would move backward instead of forward when exploring my house.” She thought scooting backward might have helped Polly avoid bumping her head while figuring out her surroundings. That was Harrington’s interpretation, not a medical finding.

An initial veterinary exam suggested Polly was likely blind or had very limited vision. Her hind legs also seemed unstable, so Best Friends’ veterinary team assessed her for neurological conditions. The story does not give a definitive diagnosis or report the assessment’s findings beyond those observations.

How Polly began moving forward

Because Polly was much smaller than her siblings, the team also wanted to see whether proper nourishment might help. The story says she gained strength and energy after receiving it, but does not specify a nutritional protocol, medication or treatment plan.

A simple cat wand toy became a favorite. “She just loved cat toys,” Harrington said. As Polly became excited to chase the toy, she started moving forward. The story presents this as a sequence noticed by her foster caregiver, not proof that the toy treated an underlying condition.

Polly also played with other dogs, preferring gentle companions that respected her instability. Her vision improved as she tracked toys, but remained somewhat impaired; she still wobbled. Best Friends’ account credits nourishment, care, patience and play as part of her progress.

What happened to Polly

At the time Best Friends published its story on January 21, 2026, Polly had found a home. The article does not name her adopters or provide a live update on her current health or status, so it cannot establish how she is doing today.

How Polly’s story fits the no-kill context

Polly’s experience is one individual story; national shelter figures describe a different picture. In its 2025 National Shelter Data Report, Best Friends Animal Society reported that 68% of U.S. shelters reached its no-kill benchmark and that the national save rate for dogs and cats was 82.5%. These measures are distinct: one is the share of shelters meeting the benchmark, the other is the national save rate.

Best Friends defines no-kill as saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved. It uses a 90% save rate as a benchmark for measuring progress, explaining that typically no more than 10% of animals entering shelters have irreparable medical or behavioral issues that prevent rehoming or compromise quality of life. This is Best Friends’ definition and measurement benchmark, not a universal statutory standard.

The same 2025 report says 396,000 dogs and cats were killed in U.S. shelters. Best Friends describes that number as the gap to a 90% save rate in every shelter; it does not count every pet losing its life in a shelter. The report also records 34,000 fewer dogs and cats killed in 2025 than in 2024. These are organization-reported figures for 2025, and later annual reporting may supersede them.
