Yes—the viral photo is reported to be genuine, but “human-sized” is a misleading description. The bat’s broad wingspan and folded wings make it look enormous; its body is much shorter. The animal is often identified online as a giant golden-crowned flying fox, a species native to the Philippines, but the photo’s exact species and location have not been confirmed.
Is the viral human-sized bat photo real?
ScienceAlert and VICE reported in July 2020 that the image is real, not a fabricated picture. That does not make every caption attached to it accurate: the dramatic “human-sized” label exaggerates the animal’s body size, and the bat’s identity has not been settled. ScienceAlert’s 2020 report and VICE’s July 2020 report both describe uncertainty about the species.

Why does the bat look as large as a person?
The key distinction is wingspan versus body length. ScienceAlert reported that flying foxes can have wingspans of about 1.7 metres (5.5 feet), while their bodies are below 30 centimetres (11.8 inches) long. Those are general size figures, not measurements of the bat in the photo.
In the image, perspective and the bat’s folded wings contribute to an elongated silhouette that can appear person-sized. The available reporting does not establish the camera distance or scene geometry, so the image cannot be used to calculate the animal’s actual size.

What kind of bat is in the photograph?
The image is often said to show a giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus), but that identification is not confirmed. ScienceAlert and VICE note that the expected golden crown is not apparent in the image, and another large flying fox is a possibility. A genuine photograph can be shared with an uncertain species label.
For scale, Bat Conservation International describes the giant golden-crowned flying fox as averaging more than five feet in wingspan and weighing up to three pounds. The Field Museum gives a wingspan of five feet or more and a weight of 1,200 grams or more. These are species-level descriptions from pages that do not state publication years; they are not measurements of the photographed animal.

Where can the giant golden-crowned flying fox be found?
If the bat is a giant golden-crowned flying fox, its native range is the Philippines. Bat Conservation International says the species is widespread across the country except in the Batanes and Babuyan island groups, and favors mature lowland forests. That range does not prove the viral photograph was taken in the Philippines.

The report describes a monitoring observation, not a population estimate, and it does not establish the location of the older viral image. The Philippine Information Agency report quotes DENR-CENRO Calanasan officer-in-charge Dorothy Joy C. Cayaba: “The successful documentation of the Golden-crowned Flying Fox underscores the value of sustained biodiversity surveys and threatened species monitoring in Apayao.”

What does this flying fox eat, and why does it matter?
Giant golden-crowned flying foxes eat fruit; Bat Conservation International describes the species as a fig specialist. They are not human predators, though that fact should not be taken as a guarantee that approaching or handling a wild bat is safe.
Fruit-eating bats also help disperse seeds. The Field Museum explains that this ecological role can support forest regeneration. Bat Conservation International identifies habitat loss, hunting, and disturbance at roost sites as threats to the species, which it lists as Endangered; the Philippine Information Agency also describes it as endangered in its 2026 report.
