For pets, fall plants are not a simple safe-or-dangerous group: mums are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, while several other plants on ASPCA’s fall list are classified as non-toxic. Red maple is an important exception by species: its leaves are toxic to horses, especially when wilted, but are listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats. These classifications are not permission for pets to chew plants; even non-toxic plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
Which fall plants are hazardous to pets?
ASPCA’s seasonal list, published October 7, 2025, distinguishes plants by toxicity and, in some cases, by animal species and plant condition. The classifications below are pet-safety guidance, not a complete review of plant risks to people.

What “non-toxic” does—and does not—mean
ASPCA’s non-toxic label describes a toxicity classification; it does not mean a plant is safe for a pet to eat. ASPCA cautions that consuming any plant material may cause mild gastrointestinal problems and recommends preventing pets from eating plants. A pet’s reaction also depends on what plant and part were eaten, so do not infer safety from a fall bloom’s appearance or from another animal’s classification.

What to do if a pet eats a fall plant
- Identify the plant if you can. Note the plant’s name and which part may have been eaten. ASPCA’s database advises checking the plant name; the FDA’s pet-safety guidance also notes that the part eaten can matter.
- Contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control immediately if exposure to a poisonous or potentially toxic plant is suspected. ASPCA lists its 24-hour Poison Control number as (888) 426-4435. Do not wait for symptoms before following that advice.
- Follow professional instructions. ASPCA’s general plant database advises contacting a veterinarian or its emergency poison hotline if an animal may be ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance.
ASPCA’s 2025 seasonal article gives the same immediate-contact advice for suspected exposure.
