False pregnancy, also called pseudopregnancy or phantom pregnancy, can cause a dog to show physical or behavioral signs of pregnancy after a heat cycle even when she is not pregnant. Signs often settle without treatment, but they do not confirm the cause: contact your veterinarian if mating may have occurred, and seek prompt advice if your dog seems painful or seriously ill.

What is false pregnancy in dogs?

False pregnancy is a hormone-related condition in which a nonpregnant female dog develops signs associated with pregnancy. The term does not mean that a dog is pretending, and behavior or changes to the mammary glands alone cannot establish what is happening.

Hormonal changes occur in the post-heat phase in nonpregnant dogs; some develop noticeable signs and others show few or none. The precise cause of overt pseudopregnancy is not fully understood. This description is consistent with the Merck Veterinary Manual’s owner guidance and clinical review, the latter fully reviewed in July 2023 and listed as last updated in July 2026.

What signs should I look for, and when do they start?

Signs vary between dogs and can be physical, behavioral, or both. PDSA’s UK-focused guidance, published in September 2021, says phantom pregnancy usually develops about 6–8 weeks after a season. Merck says signs usually resolve on their own in 1–3 weeks. These are typical windows, not a diagnosis or a guarantee; an individual dog’s course can differ.

Dog & Cat Pregnancy Test Kit, 2-Test Urine-Based Screening
  • UP TO 98.8% ACCURACY FOR PEACE OF MIND: Designed to detect relaxin, a key pregnancy marker, from your pet’s urine. This dog pregnancy test kit and cat pregnancy test kit helps pet parents and breeders feel more confident when checking for a planned or surprise litter at home.
  • ONE KIT FOR DOGS AND CATS: Made for both canine and feline pregnancy screening, this pet pregnancy test kit is ideal for multi-pet homes, breeders, foster homes, and pet owners who want one simple kit for either a dog or cat instead of buying separate tests.
  • URINE-BASED, NO BLOOD DRAW NEEDED: Unlike blood-sample pregnancy tests, this urine-based kit uses a fresh urine sample with no needles, no pricks, and no stressful blood collection. A gentler option for shy pets, senior pets, anxious pets, or fur babies who hate clinic-style handling.
  • MORE COMPLETE THAN A BASIC 2-PACK TEST: Includes 2 pregnancy test cards, urine collection liners, sample cups, disposable droppers, a Quick Screening Guide, and a Result & Retest Card — giving pet parents more than test cards alone.
  • EASIER HOME SCREENING FROM SAMPLE TO RESULT: Liners help collect urine before it gets soaked into puppy pads, cat litter, bedding, or tissue, while the guide card helps explain positive, negative, invalid, or faint results and when to use the second test for a follow-up check.

Physical signs

  • Enlarged mammary glands, sometimes with milk secretion
  • Weight gain or, in some dogs, a swollen abdomen

Behavioral signs

  • Nesting or restlessness
  • Collecting, guarding, or mothering toys and other objects
  • Low energy, reduced appetite, or nervousness
  • In some dogs, aggression

How can I tell whether my dog is pregnant?

You cannot reliably distinguish a false pregnancy from a true one based on signs alone. If mating may have happened, contact a veterinarian to discuss checking for pregnancy. Merck’s owner guidance says assessment uses the dog’s history and examination, with ultrasound or X-rays when needed. There is no single specific test that confirms pseudopregnancy itself; the veterinarian considers the signs and rules out other explanations, including true pregnancy.

When should I call a vet?

Contact your veterinarian for advice if you think your dog may be experiencing a false pregnancy, particularly if there is any possibility of mating. PDSA advises urgent contact if the dog appears painful or develops a more serious problem such as mastitis, an infection of the mammary gland. This is not an exhaustive list: if she seems seriously unwell, seek prompt veterinary advice.

What can I do at home?

For mild signs, veterinary sources say treatment may not be needed and the condition often settles on its own. Home steps are supportive; they do not establish the diagnosis or replace veterinary assessment when it is needed.

  • Do not express or milk the glands. Merck warns that doing so can stimulate further milk production.
  • Limit nipple licking. PDSA suggests an optional protective body suit or collar if licking is a problem. These accessories are only a way to reduce stimulation; they do not treat the hormonal condition.
  • Handle mothered objects calmly. If your dog is treating toys or other items like puppies, PDSA suggests removing them calmly and distracting her rather than punishing her.

What treatment might a vet recommend?

A veterinarian may consider treatment if signs are troublesome. Merck’s clinical review describes prescription prolactin-inhibiting medication, including cabergoline. Medication choice and use require veterinary direction; do not obtain or give these drugs without it.

Spaying can prevent future false pregnancies, but timing matters. Discuss an individual dog’s timing with a veterinarian.
