A moose collision near Denali National Park killed a 24-year-old driver and injured a passenger in the early hours of August 1, 2025. The National Park Service called it a “sobering reminder” of wildlife hazards on Alaska’s roads and urged drivers to slow down and stay alert, especially when visibility is poor.
What happened in the fatal moose collision near Denali?
At approximately 1 a.m. on August 1, 2025, a northbound vehicle struck a moose near mile 235 of the George Parks Highway, just south of the entrance to Denali National Park’s Park Road. The 24-year-old male driver died at the scene. A 24-year-old female passenger was injured and taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. The National Park Service said the people involved were citizens of Bulgaria and North Macedonia; it did not identify them by name. The NPS incident release said the highway remained open and the agency was investigating at the time of publication.
The Park Service wrote: “The collision serves as a sobering reminder of the hazards of wildlife along Alaska’s roadways.” It did not state what caused the crash, and the available release does not establish the investigation’s later status or any determination of fault.
Why are moose collisions a risk in Alaska?
Moose and other large animals may be difficult to spot, particularly at dawn, dusk, and nighttime. Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game advises drivers to expect wildlife on roads and notes that collisions are more frequent in winter. In its 2023 summary of a 2022 study by Cunningham and colleagues, the National Park Service reported that moose-vehicle collisions in the study area were 2.4–5.7 times more frequent in winter (December through February) than in early summer. The same summary said 82% of documented collisions occurred after dark. Nighttime traffic volumes in winter were eight times higher than in summer in the study’s account, a factor to keep in mind when interpreting the after-dark share.

Statewide counts have a different scope from those study findings. Alaska Fish and Game reported that about 520 wildlife-involved crashes were reported to Alaska State Troopers in 2023, compared with close to 670 in each of the two preceding years. The department also estimated at least 800 vehicle accidents caused by moose statewide each year and cautioned that not all collisions are reported. These figures are reported crashes or an agency estimate, not a count of every incident.
How can drivers reduce the chance of hitting a moose?
The NPS recommendations following the Denali-area collision are to reduce speed, especially in low light; stay alert for animals near or on the roadway; use high beams when possible; wear seat belts; and avoid distractions. These are general safety recommendations, not findings about the cause of this particular crash.
