A Labrador named Ollie was recovering from eyelid surgery when his owner’s father sat beside him on the couch wearing an Elizabethan collar of his own. The lighthearted TikTok moment was memorable, but the family never settled on one reason for the gesture: it may have been meant to make everyone laugh, comfort Ollie, or both.
Why Ollie was wearing a cone
Ollie had recently undergone surgery to remove a lump from his eyelid. His recovery collar helped keep him from disturbing the area while the stitches healed. In a comment quoted by iHeartDogs, his owner, Alex, said: “He has healed well and had the all-clear, but needed to wear the cone to protect his eyelid whilst the stitches healed.”

An Elizabethan collar—also called an E-collar or cone—is protective equipment, not a punishment. Dogs may wear one to prevent licking or chewing a wound or dressing, or scratching at the face or head. Interfering with a healing site can delay healing or cause injury, notes VCA Animal Hospitals.

Alex did not claim to know exactly what her father intended. As quoted by iHeartDogs, she said: “My dad’s the kind of dad who likes to make everyone laugh. I’m not sure if he put the cone on to make my family laugh, or genuinely to make Ollie feel better. Either way, Ollie seemed happier in his cone and it gave all of us a big laugh.” The available account leaves open whether the gesture was for the family, for Ollie, or both.

The TikTok appeared on March 22, 2022, on the good.boy.Ollie account, which iHeartDogs identifies as being run by Alex. Daily Paws reported on April 8, 2022, that the clip had received more than 3.5 million views by then. That is a view count reported at the time, not a current total.

What to know if your dog needs a recovery collar
A cone’s purpose is to stop a dog reaching a particular healing area. VCA advises that it should extend slightly beyond the muzzle, fit comfortably without slipping off, and be checked for skin irritation. Supervise your dog, especially while they adjust to wearing it.
Soft collars or other options, such as a recovery suit, may work for some dogs, but suitability depends on the area being protected and whether the dog can still reach it. Ask your veterinarian before changing the setup, and follow their instructions about how long the collar should stay on. These are general care points, not individualized medical advice about Ollie.
