Published Chaffhaye feeding directions vary by animal: horses receive 1.5–2 lb per 100 lb of body weight daily, while ruminants receive 2.0–2.5 lb per 100 lb. The directions also call for a gradual 7–14-day transition. These figures are product guidance, not a complete ration for an individual animal; check the current bag label and account for the rest of the diet.

What is Chaffhaye?

Chaffhaye is cultured, fermented alfalfa forage sold in sealed bags. A retailer’s listing identifies alfalfa, cane molasses, and dried fermentation products among the ingredients, and describes it as forage for the forage portion of an animal’s diet. Formulations and guaranteed analyses can differ, so use the current label for the particular product you have. [c002]

How much Chaffhaye should you feed?

The following daily amounts are published product directions reproduced by a retailer. They are starting guidance, not an individualized ration calculation. [c001] [c002]

Animal group Published daily direction
Horses 1.5–2 lb per 100 lb of body weight
Ruminants 2.0–2.5 lb per 100 lb of body weight
Deer and exotics Free choice is described as ideal for many operations; if rationed, 1.5 lb per 100 lb of body weight
Chickens and poultry 1/2–1 cup per bird

For an animal group with a weight-based rate, calculate the amount from the animal’s body weight rather than treating the listed amount as a fixed serving. The guidance does not establish a complete ration for a particular animal.

How to transition an animal onto Chaffhaye

  1. Introduce it gradually over 7–14 days. The feeding guideline recommends a gradual feed change rather than an abrupt switch. [c001]
  2. Account for the whole diet. The appropriate ration can depend on age, breed, workload, pasture, and whether Chaffhaye is fed alone or alongside other forage or grain.
  3. Monitor body condition. The guideline allows adjustments of up to 10% as appropriate and says not to change the feeding rate by more than 2 lb per day. These are product directions, not a substitute for an animal-specific feeding plan. [c001]
  4. Get advice when the ration is uncertain. The guideline notes that an energy or vitamin/mineral supplement may be needed. Ask an animal nutritionist or veterinarian about an individual animal’s needs. [c001]

How to store an opened bag

The manufacturer-associated storage guidance recommends keeping Chaffhaye in its original bag, removing excess air, rolling and securing the top, and storing it in a cool, dry place. It gives 7–10 days of freshness after opening, depending on weather; treat that as a guide rather than a guarantee for every storage condition. Follow the current package instructions if they differ. [c003]
