Born on February 13, 1976, in Amherst, Nova Scotia, she was raised mainly in Calgary, Alberta, and later became closely associated with Toronto’s independent-music community and the collective Broken Social Scene.
Her best-known song is “1234,” but reducing Feist’s career to that single track misses the wider arc of her work. Across six solo studio albums—from Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down) to Multitudes—she has moved between sparse guitar songs, bossa nova-influenced pop, layered arrangements and experimental live performance.

She appeared on the group’s early work and has remained connected with its wider circle of musicians. Calling her simply a “former member” can be misleading, because her role has included contributing and performing rather than fitting one narrow, permanent band position.

Her music is commonly described as indie pop, folk, art pop, chamber pop and pop with bossa nova influences. The genre labels vary, but the consistent features are a distinctive vocal delivery, economical songwriting and arrangements that can sound both intimate and unusually spacious.
Feist’s albums in order
| Album | Year | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down) | 1999 | Feist’s first solo release |
| Let It Die | 2004 | The breakthrough album that won two Juno Awards |
| The Reminder | 2007 | The international breakthrough, including “1234” |
| Metals | 2011 | The Polaris Music Prize-winning album |
| Pleasure | 2017 | A more exposed and direct-sounding record |
| Multitudes | 2023 | Her sixth full-length studio album |
Open Season is sometimes inserted into album lists as though it were Feist’s third conventional studio album. It is better understood as a collection of remixes and alternate versions connected with her earlier work, not as a standard numbered studio album.
Let It Die and the early solo career
Feist began her solo recording career with Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down) in 1999. Her second album, Let It Die, arrived in 2004 and brought much wider attention.
At the 2005 Juno Awards, Let It Die won Alternative Album of the Year and Feist won New Artist of the Year. The record helped establish the balance between acoustic songwriting, polished pop and retro-influenced arrangements that became central to her public identity.
Why “1234” became Feist’s signature song
“1234” appears on The Reminder, released in 2007. The song became Feist’s biggest mainstream success and gained major additional exposure through an iPod nano advertising campaign.
Feist did not write “1234” alone. It was co-written with Australian singer-songwriter Sally Seltmann, who had previously recorded an earlier version under the title “Sally’s Song.” The advertising placement greatly increased the song’s visibility, although it should not be treated as the sole explanation for its success.
“1234” was connected with four Grammy nominations at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008:
- Best New Artist
- Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “1234”
- Best Pop Vocal Album for The Reminder
- Best Music Video
Feist did not win a Grammy. The Recording Academy currently lists four nominations and zero wins.
Metals and the Polaris Music Prize
Feist followed The Reminder with Metals in 2011. Compared with the bright accessibility of “1234,” the album is often heard as more elemental and restrained, with an emphasis on texture, tension and emotional weight.
Metals won the 2012 Polaris Music Prize. The Polaris is a Canadian award judged on artistic merit rather than sales, making the win an important recognition of the album’s creative achievement rather than simply its commercial reach.
What is Feist’s latest album?
Feist’s latest listed solo studio album is Multitudes, released on April 14, 2023. It is her sixth full-length studio album and followed Pleasure, which came out in 2017.
The record contains 12 tracks, including:
- “In Lightning”
- “Hiding Out in the Open”
- “Borrow Trouble”
- “Of Womankind”
- “Song for Sad Friends”
Feist led the production with Robbie Lackritz and Mocky, while Blake Mills provided additional production on several tracks. The writing was shaped by two major personal experiences: the birth of Feist’s daughter and the death of her father.
How the Multitudes live project shaped the album
The songs for Multitudes were developed partly through an experimental live performance project of the same name, staged during 2021 and 2022. Rather than treating the concert as a straightforward album-promotion tour, the project used an immersive, communal format in which the audience was part of the environment.
The performance was designed with 360-degree sound. The album was also produced in Dolby Atmos, extending the project’s interest in spatial listening beyond the venue. This makes Multitudes distinct in both its subject matter and the way its music was developed and presented.
