The “hand-sized spiders” are great raft spiders, or fen raft spiders (Dolomedes plantarius). Conservation partners released captive-reared spiders into restored British wetlands; the evidence describes a recovery of a native species, not an invasive spider spreading across Europe. A UK population estimate reported in 2024 is not a measure of a continent-wide surge.
Which spiders were released?
The reports concern the great raft spider, also called the fen raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius), a semi-aquatic spider native to the UK and found elsewhere in mainland Europe. The British releases were part of conservation work to help this native wetland species—not the introduction of a foreign spider.
Its habitat is specialist: fens and marshes, including the unpolluted wetlands described in the 2024 report. It is not a household spider, and the releases were directed at suitable wetland sites.
What happened in the UK conservation programme?
A Nottingham Trent University conservation account describes licensed translocations of locally sourced, captive-reared spiderlings into restored habitat. The account records releases from 2010 to 2012 and successful breeding at two release sites by spiders released in 2010. The work involved site consents and licensing under relevant UK conservation law. Nottingham Trent University’s conservation account

In 2016, The Independent reported that Chessington World of Adventures had bred the spiders since 2011 and released around 400 over four years. That report said the wild UK population had nearly doubled and that captive rearing could stop because the population had recovered sufficiently at that time. Those are historical programme results, not a current trend measurement. The Independent, 20 June 2016
How many are there, and what does that number mean?
A 2024 Guardian report attributed an estimate of 10,000 breeding females across the UK to the RSPB. It is a UK estimate, not a total for Europe. The report does not provide a comparable Europe-wide population trend or an uncertainty range, so the figure cannot establish that the species is spreading rapidly across the continent. The Guardian, 5 November 2024
| Figure | Scope and date | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| Around 400 spiders released over four years | Chessington programme, as reported by The Independent in 2016 | Scale of a historical UK conservation effort |
| Wild UK population nearly doubled | Programme result reported in 2016 | Recovery reported at that time; not a current population trend estimate |
| 10,000 breeding females | UK estimate attributed to the RSPB by The Guardian in 2024 | A UK population estimate, not a European total or rate of spread |
Are they really “hand-sized”?
The phrase refers to leg span, not the spider’s body length. London Zoo gave a typical stretched leg span of 65–70 mm in the 2024 Guardian report. “Hand-sized” is a vivid comparison, not a precise measurement of the body.
Fen raft spiders are brown with cream stripes. They can move across water, and earlier reporting describes them taking aquatic and terrestrial prey, including occasional tadpoles and small fish. Their appearance and aquatic habits help explain why they attract attention, but they are adapted to wetland life rather than living in homes.

Are fen raft spiders taking over Europe?
No continent-wide takeover is demonstrated by the evidence cited in coverage of the British recovery. The species’ presence in mainland Europe is part of its native distribution; it is not evidence that the British conservation releases caused a European expansion. The reported British releases were targeted work at restored wetland sites.
A 2025 secondary feature used “record pace” framing, but the material available does not establish a reliable current Europe-wide rate of spread or a verified statistic behind that claim. The documented facts support a UK conservation recovery and a UK population estimate, not a European invasion or record-setting expansion.
Are they dangerous to people?
The cited reports characterize fen raft spiders as harmless to humans and place them in wetland habitat rather than human living spaces. Dave Clarke, head of London Zoo’s Friendly Spider Programme, told The Guardian: “Of course, there is also nothing to fear from increased numbers of spiders.” His comment addresses concern about the reported increase; it should not be read as a broader medical claim.
