Temporary foster homes give vulnerable kittens individual attention, feeding, and socialization while they grow toward adoption, and they free shelter space for other animals. The work ranges from light daily care for kittens that already eat on their own to round-the-clock bottle or syringe feeding for newborns, so the right foster role depends on the kitten’s age and needs.
What fostering a kitten involves
Foster care is temporary. A foster caregiver takes a kitten or a nursing mother out of a shelter setting and provides a home until the animal is ready for adoption or for the next stage of care. According to the ASPCA’s Los Angeles and New York kitten programs, the job typically includes feeding, cleaning, daily observation, regular contact with the program, and positive socialization such as handling and exposure to normal household sounds.
How much of that work you take on depends almost entirely on how old the kitten is and what it needs. Organizations generally place kittens into a few broad categories, and it helps to understand them before you sign up.
Foster roles by kitten age and need
The ASPCA’s kitten foster guidance describes several distinct roles. They are not interchangeable, and a volunteer who is comfortable with one may not be suited to another.

| Foster role | Typical kitten or cat | Care demands described by the ASPCA | Time demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kittens eating independently | Older kittens that eat and use a litter box on their own | Regular feeding, cleaning, daily health and behavior observation, and socialization | Not stated as hours; the ASPCA says time demands depend on age and needs |
| Neonates (newborn kittens) | Very young kittens that cannot yet eat on their own | Frequent bottle or syringe feeding, warmth, and close monitoring | The ASPCA says neonates may need round-the-clock care |
| Nursing mothers | Queens caring for their own litters | Supporting the mother’s care of her kittens and keeping the setting calm and clean | Not stated as hours; depends on litter size and stage |
| Kittens with medical or social needs | Kittens recovering from an illness or injury, or needing extra handling to become comfortable with people | Following veterinary instructions from the program, medication where prescribed, and gradual socialization | Depends on the medical or behavioral plan set by the program |
Neonatal care is the most demanding role
Bottle-feeding newborns is the work that most often surprises new volunteers. The ASPCA states that neonates may need round-the-clock care and frequent feeding by bottle or syringe. Feeding amounts, schedules, formula choice, and warming methods should come from your foster coordinator or a veterinary professional, not from a general article. If you cannot commit to overnight feeding, neonatal fostering is probably not the right role, even though the need for it is real.
Kittens that eat on their own
Older kittens are often the easiest entry point. The main tasks are regular meals, litter care, watching for changes in appetite, energy, or stool, and spending time handling them so they grow comfortable with people. The ASPCA treats this socialization as part of the foster goal, not an extra. A kitten that learns to be picked up, played with, and left alone calmly is more likely to be adopted.
What shelters and programs typically provide
A foster caregiver rarely works alone. The ASPCA’s Los Angeles program page says it supplies food, supplies, medical services, and training to its foster caregivers, and it notes that a playpen can be provided to fosters who do not have a spare room. Its New York kitten nursery page states that kittens may require frequent rechecks at the nursery.

- One-Stop Scientific Feeding: Designed specifically for newborn kittens, puppies, and various small animals, this kit includes a 50ml professional feeding bottle, four precision syringes of different capacities (1ml, 3ml, 5ml, 10ml), four biomimetic nipples, as well as a funnel and measuring cup. From precise feeding immediately after birth to supplemental feeding during the transition period, this single kit meets all your care needs.
- Precise Measurement for Safe Feeding: Recognizing that newborn pets are extremely sensitive to feeding amounts, the kit includes four syringes of different sizes, each featuring clear, durable graduations. This allows you to control feeding with milliliter-level precision based on your pet’s weight and age, effectively preventing choking or digestive strain caused by overfeeding.
- Bio-Mimetic Nipples: Made from ultra-soft, food-grade silicone, these bio-mimetic nipples replicate the natural feel of a mother dog or cat’s mouth. They are bite-resistant and gentle on the mouth. Multiple nipple shapes are available to suit pets of different sizes and developmental stages, increasing the success rate of feeding.
- Easy to Clean, Comes with a Dedicated Storage Case: The included cleaning brush easily reaches the bottom of bottles and syringes, ensuring no milk residue remains. All accessories are neatly stored in a transparent storage jar/container, making it convenient for home storage and keeping your tools organized and ready to use—whether you’re traveling with your pet or on the go.
- Essential Professional Tools for Young Pets: Whether caring for orphaned puppies or kittens, administering medication to sick adult pets, or providing nutritional support for frail premature pets, this multifunctional kit offers the most professional support. The included measuring cup and funnel make the process of mixing formula more precise and spill-free, making it the ideal assistant for pet owners and animal rescuers.
These descriptions apply to the ASPCA’s own programs. Other shelters and rescues set their own rules, so ask before you commit:
- What supplies are provided, and what must you buy yourself?
- Who handles veterinary care, and what is the process for an urgent problem after hours?
- How often will you see or speak with a coordinator, and how are check-ins scheduled?
- Is a playpen or separate room available, or do you need your own safe space?
- What is the expected length of the placement?
On length, the ASPCA says the average foster period for kittens in its New York nursery is two to eight weeks, as stated on its program page accessed in October 2026. That figure describes one program, not kitten fostering in general. Your own organization may set a different timeline.
Why fostering helps shelters, in the ASPCA’s words
The ASPCA’s 2018 feature Finding Fosters: How Temporary Homes Are Saving Kittens presents fostering as a way to extend shelter capacity as well as a way to care for individual animals. That is the organization’s program rationale and the view of its staff at the time. It is not a nationally measured outcome. The feature’s reported examples were historical, and they should be read as individual stories rather than current totals.

Three staff members were quoted in that feature, with the roles they held when it was published:
- Eileen Hanavan, Senior Manager of Foster & Offsite Programs for the ASPCA Adoption Center: “When you place one animal in a foster home, you open space in the shelter for another animal in need.”
- Tina Reddington, Director of the Los Angeles ASPCA Volunteer Program: “A foster parent can make the difference between life and death because tiny kittens can’t survive on their own in a shelter.”
- Miguel Torres, ASPCA Community Engagement Manager in Los Angeles: “Fostering teaches you empathy toward the most vulnerable of animals.”
The feature followed foster caregivers in California and New York. One, Amber Gil, had fostered 41 kittens over two years at the time of publication. Another, Claire Bienen, cared for Misha, a seven-ounce kitten with a fractured hind leg. Both are reported examples from 2018, not current program records.

- The ASPCA reports that it has helped 11,000 kittens through its Kitten Nursery in New York City and 12,000 through the Los Angeles Kitten Foster Program. These are cumulative program milestones, not annual totals or outcome rates.
If you find kittens outdoors
Finding kittens outside does not automatically mean they have been abandoned. The ASPCA warns that a mother may simply be away getting food or hiding from people. Removing kittens without checking can separate them from a mother who is still caring for them, so the first step is to observe rather than act.
- Watch the area from a distance for a period of time, and check whether a cat returns to the kittens.
- Look at the kittens. Assess whether any appear ill or injured, such as limping, crying constantly, visibly weak, or with eye or nasal discharge.
- If a kitten is ill or injured, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly for professional help.
- If the mother does not return and the kittens need help, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic for guidance on next steps.
- Check whether the kittens or the cat have identification or a microchip, which a veterinary clinic or shelter can scan.
- Check your local rules about reporting found animals, since requirements differ by city and county.
The ASPCA’s found-kitten guidance is titled “I Found Kittens Outside, What Do I Do?” and is the reference to follow for the decision steps.
How to start as a kitten foster
If you want to help, a practical first step is to find a local shelter or rescue with a foster program and ask what its volunteers receive. Match your expectations to the roles in the table above, be honest about your schedule, and confirm whether your home has a safe, separate space for a litter of kittens. A kitten playpen is one piece of equipment that foster programs use, and the ASPCA’s Los Angeles program says it can provide one, so ask your organization before buying your own.

Fostering works best when the caregiver can keep to the program’s feeding, monitoring, and veterinary instructions and stay in regular contact with the coordinator. The kittens’ eventual adoption depends on that consistency as much as on the affection a foster provides.
The feature’s closing question, “Inspired by these true tales of kitten fosters?”, is one that many readers will answer with yes. The practical next step is a conversation with a local program, not a purchase.
