Giant tortoises carrying ancestry from Floreana’s extinct tortoise lineage have been returned to the island. The Galápagos native form, Chelonoidis niger niger, has not been restored as an unchanged original population: its surviving genetic legacy was found in tortoises on another island, then used in a breeding and reintroduction effort.
What returned to Floreana?
The return is of bred giant tortoises with partial ancestry from the Floreana form, not a rediscovered population of purebred tortoises. The native Floreana giant tortoise, Chelonoidis niger niger, is considered extinct on the island. Galápagos Conservation Trust places its disappearance in the 1840s or 1850s, an estimated period rather than a precisely documented last sighting. Genetic analysis identified wild tortoises carrying partial ancestry from the extinct Floreana lineage on Wolf Volcano, on Isabela Island. Breeding made reintroduction possible
Selected tortoises were bred, and their descendants became part of the return effort. This is a conservation reintroduction using surviving ancestry; it does not mean scientists recreated the original species genetically or recovered Floreana’s former wild population intact.

How many were released?
An Associated Press report dated February 20, 2026, said the Galápagos National Park Directorate released 158 juvenile tortoises on Floreana. AP reported that the released animals carried between 40% and 80% ancestry from the extinct lineage, and that releases were planned in stages. Those are figures reported by AP, not independently confirmed program totals. Associated Press
The release is one stage in a longer restoration effort; it should not be read as evidence that the full intended population has already been returned. Publicly available reporting cited here does not establish survival rates for the released cohort or provide a definitive total for all planned releases.

Why restore tortoises on Floreana?
Giant tortoises can shape island ecosystems through movement and grazing, and by dispersing seeds. Restoring tortoises is therefore part of a wider effort to rebuild ecological functions, rather than simply reintroducing a conspicuous animal. Floreana’s restoration program also involves invasive-species management and aims to return multiple locally missing species or their closest surviving relatives. What this return does—and does not—mean
- It does mean that tortoises descended in part from the Floreana lineage are again living on their historic island.
- It does not mean that an unchanged population survived on Floreana or that the original tortoise has been genetically recreated.
- It remains a developing restoration effort: releases are staged, and the available reporting does not establish cohort survival or final program totals.
