Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf someone who says they can recover money or goods lost in an earlier scam is asking for an upfront fee, financial details, or urgent action, treat the offer as a likely second scam. A legitimate recovery is not guaranteed, and a complaint number does not mean your money has been returned. Stop responding, contact the provider that handled the original payment, secure any exposed accounts, and report the contact through official U.S. channels.
How to tell whether a recovery offer is another scam
Recovery scammers target people who have already lost money, prizes, or merchandise. They may contact you by phone, email, social media, or messaging app, and may pretend to represent a government agency, consumer group, or law firm. The FTC warns consumers not to pay an unexpected recovery contact and to verify claimed agency affiliations independently: FTC guidance on recovery scams.

Red flags to watch for
- An upfront retainer, processing fee, administrative charge, or other payment before the promised recovery.
- Requests for bank details, account credentials, identity information, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.
- Pressure to act immediately, click an unofficial link, or install software.
- Claims of government, court, or law-enforcement authority that you have not independently verified.
- A guarantee that your money will be recovered.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warns that scammers impersonate its staff with fake social profiles, spoofed reporting websites, and AI-generated videos. Fraudulent pages may collect personal information while pretending to accept an IC3 complaint. IC3 does not recover funds through social media or charge for recovery; type ic3.gov into your browser instead of following a stranger’s link. See the IC3 impersonation alert dated July 20, 2026.
The FBI has also warned about fictitious law firms targeting cryptocurrency victims. These operations may use fake attorney identities or credentials, invent regulators, claim government partnerships, and demand cryptocurrency or gift cards in exchange for supposed legal recovery. Check a lawyer’s identity and licensing independently, and contact any named government office through contact details you find yourself. The FBI’s August 13, 2025 public service announcement describes these tactics.

A scammer may know about your earlier loss because victim contact and payment information can be retained or resold. The CFTC advises independently checking a purported government or court notice before responding: CFTC guidance for fraud victims.
What to do right now
- Stop contact with the suspected recovery scammer. Do not pay, share credentials or financial information, install software, or use links they supplied. Do not keep engaging to collect more evidence.
- Contact the original payment provider immediately. Tell the bank, payment app, wire service, card issuer, gift-card company, cryptocurrency exchange, or delivery service used to send the money that the transaction was connected to a scam. Ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or refunded. Options depend on the payment method; if a gift card was involved, keep the card and receipt.
- Secure exposed accounts and identity information. Change compromised passwords and any reused passwords, then enable two-factor authentication. If your Social Security number was misused, use IdentityTheft.gov. If someone accessed your device, follow the FTC’s device- and account-specific recovery guidance.
- Report through official channels. In the United States, report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For internet-enabled crime, submit a complaint to IC3.gov. You can also contact your state attorney general or local police where appropriate. The CFPB’s fraud guidance lists reporting routes. Find agency websites or phone numbers independently rather than using contact information from the suspected scammer.
- Save the evidence you already have. Keep messages, phone numbers, email headers, web addresses, receipts, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, and dates. This record can help when speaking with your provider or making an official report.
Can someone really get your money back?
Sometimes a provider may be able to stop or reverse a transaction, especially if you contact it quickly, but there is no guaranteed outcome. The remedy depends on the payment method, how much time has passed, and whether the payment was authorized or made because of deception. Ask the provider what options apply to your transaction; do not assume that reporting the scam or receiving a complaint number means funds have been recovered.

Who should you contact after a scam?
Start with the institution or service that handled the original payment, because it can explain any transaction-specific stop, dispute, or reversal options. Use the appropriate U.S. reporting channels for the type of incident:
- FTC: ReportFraud.ftc.gov for fraud reports and IdentityTheft.gov if identity information was misused.
- FBI IC3: IC3.gov for internet-enabled crime.
- State or local authorities: Your state attorney general or local police may also be appropriate, depending on the incident.
These channels are U.S.-focused. If you are elsewhere, contact your country’s consumer-protection authority, police, and financial provider through independently verified details. The FTC’s June 2026 guidance also warns: “The FTC will never threaten you, say you must transfer your money to ‘protect it,’ or tell you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone. That’s a scam.”
