Signs can be vague and overlap with other illnesses, so a veterinarian uses an examination, bloodwork, and imaging—especially ultrasound—to assess the cause. Jaundice, marked pain, fever, collapse or weakness, or rapid breathing or heart rate with illness warrants urgent veterinary attention.
What does the gallbladder do?
The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, a fluid made by the liver that helps digest fats. Bile normally travels through ducts into the small intestine. Disease can affect the gallbladder or bile ducts and interfere with bile flow.
Types of gallbladder disease in dogs
| Condition | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gallbladder mucocele (GBM) | An abnormal accumulation of thick, mucus-rich material that distends the gallbladder. | It may progress, obstruct bile flow, damage the gallbladder, or rupture. |
| Cholecystitis | Inflammation of the gallbladder, sometimes associated with infection, obstruction, systemic illness, cancer, or trauma. | Severe inflammation may require surgery and supportive treatment. |
| Cholelithiasis | Gallstones. | Some are incidental; others can contribute to inflammation or obstruction. |
| Bile-duct obstruction | Impaired or blocked flow of bile through the ducts. | It can occur with a mucocele, stones, inflammation, or other disease. |
| Rupture and bile peritonitis | Bile leaks into the abdomen after damage or rupture of the gallbladder or biliary tract. | This is a severe, potentially fatal complication requiring urgent veterinary care. |
A finding described as gallbladder sludge is not by itself a diagnosis of a mucocele, and not every abnormality requires surgery. The veterinarian interprets imaging alongside signs, test results, and evidence of obstruction, leakage, or progression.
What causes gallbladder disease?
There is no single proven cause of gallbladder mucocele in every dog. The process may involve abnormal mucus production, impaired bile movement or gallbladder motility, and concurrent disease.

Mucoceles have been associated with endocrine or other concurrent disease and breed predisposition. The MSD Veterinary Manual and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons identify associations such as Cushing’s disease and hypothyroidism; the ACVS also notes susceptibility in Shetland Sheepdogs. These are risk associations, not proof that a particular condition caused an individual dog’s illness.
Cholecystitis may be associated with bacterial infection, systemic illness, cancer, trauma, or obstruction. Gallstones may be incidental or contribute to inflammation or obstruction. Rupture can follow severe inflammation, damage, obstruction, or other biliary disease. Ask your veterinarian whether underlying conditions, including hyperlipidemia or endocrine disease, should be evaluated and managed.
What are the signs of gallbladder problems in dogs?
Some dogs have vague, episodic signs, and a mucocele may be found incidentally. Reported signs include:
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Lethargy or weakness
- Abdominal discomfort or a tense posture
- Jaundice: yellowing of the eyes, gums, or skin
- Fever
- Changes in breathing or heart rate
These signs can also occur with other abdominal illnesses, so they cannot confirm gallbladder disease on their own.

Is gallbladder disease in dogs an emergency?
Contact a veterinarian promptly for persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or yellowing. Marked pain, jaundice with systemic illness, fever, weakness or collapse, or rapid breathing or heart rate should be treated as urgent. A rupture can cause bile peritonitis, a severe abdominal complication.
Do not try to diagnose or treat a suspected obstruction or rupture at home with over-the-counter products, supplements, or unapproved medication. If your dog is deteriorating quickly, seek emergency veterinary care.
How do veterinarians diagnose gallbladder problems?
Diagnosis combines the dog’s history and examination with tests selected for its condition. Symptoms or a single laboratory result are not enough to identify the cause.
Bloodwork and examination
Blood tests may show changes in liver enzymes, bilirubin, or inflammatory cells. These results must be interpreted together with the examination and imaging; they do not identify the exact cause on their own.

Abdominal ultrasound
Ultrasound can assess gallbladder contents and wall, bile ducts, and signs of obstruction or rupture. It is especially useful for evaluating the biliary system, but the veterinarian considers the whole clinical picture rather than relying on one scan alone.
Further testing
Depending on the case, surgery and examination of removed tissue, liver sampling, or bacterial culture may help identify inflammation, infection, or other disease and guide care.
Can gallbladder disease in dogs be treated?
Yes, but treatment depends on the specific diagnosis, the dog’s stability, and whether there is obstruction, inflammation, tissue injury, or leakage. Selected dogs without signs of leakage or biliary obstruction may receive veterinarian-directed medical management and close follow-up. Many clinically significant mucoceles and complicated cases require surgery and supportive care.
| Approach | When it may be considered | What guides the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Medical management with close monitoring | Selected dogs without clinical evidence of leakage or biliary obstruction. | Signs and stability, ultrasound appearance and progression, laboratory changes, concurrent disease, and ability to attend follow-up. |
| Surgery, often gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) | Most clinically significant mucoceles and many cases involving inflammation, obstruction, or rupture. | The diagnosis, complications, operative and anesthetic risk, and veterinary team’s assessment. |
The MSD Veterinary Manual describes medical care and serial biochemical and ultrasound assessment in selected cases; progression in signs, tests, or imaging is a reason to reconsider surgery. There is no single decision threshold that applies to every dog. Supportive treatment, pain control, and antimicrobials may be used when indicated. Referral to a veterinary surgeon may be appropriate, particularly in complicated disease.

What affects prognosis?
Prognosis depends on the specific condition, whether there is obstruction or rupture, the dog’s overall health, and how it responds to treatment. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons reports overall mortality of 20–39% for gallbladder mucocele disease and says that dogs that undergo cholecystectomy and survive the immediate perioperative period have an excellent long-term prognosis. These are broad reported figures, not an individual dog’s forecast.
The ACVS also reports that up to half of pets with gallbladder mucoceles have rupture at diagnosis; this estimate applies to that condition and should not be generalized to every gallbladder disorder. Early veterinary assessment can help identify disease before severe complications, but the best timing of surgery for an incidental finding depends on the individual dog.

Follow the operating surgeon’s instructions for medications, activity, incision care, and rechecks. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons advises quiet activity for two weeks after surgery, monitoring the incision, and often using an Elizabethan collar to limit licking or self-trauma. The surgeon’s plan takes precedence, and a collar should be used if recommended for your dog.
Contact the surgical team if your dog worsens or you have concerns about the incision or recovery.

FAQ
Does a dog with a gallbladder mucocele need surgery?
Not every dog follows the same plan. Cholecystectomy is the treatment of choice for most clinically significant mucoceles, while selected dogs without evidence of leakage or obstruction may be considered for veterinarian-directed medical management and close follow-up.
Is gallbladder sludge the same as a mucocele?
No. Sludge is an imaging description, not by itself a diagnosis of a mucocele. A veterinarian interprets the ultrasound pattern alongside signs and other test results.
Can gallbladder disease in dogs be treated at home?
Do not try to diagnose or treat it at home. Treatment varies by diagnosis and severity, and a veterinarian should direct any medication or monitoring plan.
Are yellow gums or eyes an emergency in a dog?
Yellowing warrants prompt veterinary evaluation. It is especially urgent when accompanied by significant pain, fever, weakness or collapse, or rapid breathing or heart rate.
The bottom line
Gallbladder disease includes several problems, and its signs can resemble other illnesses. Prompt veterinary assessment is important, particularly for jaundice, marked pain, fever, weakness or collapse, or rapid breathing or heart rate; treatment depends on the diagnosis and the dog’s condition.
