Crows can benefit a garden by eating insects and carrion, but they may also eat fruit, nuts, vegetables, seeds, or seedlings—and dig up turf while searching for food. Whether they are helpful or a nuisance depends on what they are doing in your yard. Identify the damage first, then protect the specific food or planting at risk.
What do crows eat in a garden?
Crows are opportunistic omnivores. Their food may include insects, earthworms, carrion, cultivated fruit and nuts, vegetables, and seeds. They can also take advantage of human-associated food such as garbage or pet food. What they eat depends in part on what is accessible.
Government and extension guidance recognizes that crows eat insects, including pest insects, as well as carrion. That can be useful, but it does not mean crows are a net benefit to every garden: the same birds may eat crops or disturb new plantings. Government of Alberta guidance on crows and magpies and Penn State Extension’s overview of crow diets describe this broad feeding behavior.
What damage can crows cause?
Fruit, nuts, vegetables, and seeds
American crows may feed on cultivated fruit, nuts, vegetables, and seeds. They can also pull at newly planted seeds or tender young plants. In a June 30, 2025 response to a gardener whose plants had been pulled up, Oregon State University Extension’s Dr. Dana Sanchez noted that crows may watch gardeners and come early in the morning to take newly planted seeds or tender plants. Crows are not active overnight, so damage first noticed in the morning does not by itself show that it happened at night—or prove which animal caused it. Read the Oregon State Extension response.

Digging in lawns and beds
Crows may tear up turf while searching for invertebrates. In one neighborhood lawn question, an Oregon State Extension expert considered crows a likely source where grubs might be present, but that was an assessment of a particular report—not a rule that crow digging proves grubs are in your lawn. Other wildlife can cause similar damage. Check for the birds or other signs before choosing a response. See the lawn-digging response and Nebraska Extension’s guidance on crow damage.
How to keep crows away from vulnerable plants
Start with the particular attractant or damaged area rather than trying to drive every crow off the property. A crow might be eating fruit, searching turf for food, or taking seeds; those problems call for different responses.

- Confirm what is happening. Observe the area when damage occurs if possible, and look for signs that help distinguish crows from other wildlife. Damage to plants or turf alone is not a reliable identification.
- Reduce easy food. Secure garbage lids, put cans out closer to collection time, and avoid leaving food or pet food accessible. This may make a yard less attractive where those foods are the draw, but it cannot remove wild food sources or distant roost habitat. Neighbors’ food practices can also matter. Oregon State Extension’s advice on annoying crows and its guidance on encouraging small birds while discouraging crows discuss reducing food access.
- Physically exclude birds from the crop or bed. Indiana Department of Natural Resources recommends bird netting with 4-inch mesh tied at the base of fruit shrubs or trees. For seedlings or newly planted beds, Oregon State Extension suggests caging the planting. Keep netting secured so birds cannot get beneath it, and check it as part of routine garden maintenance. Indiana DNR’s American crow guidance includes the netting recommendation.
- Consider a daytime motion-detection sprinkler for a vulnerable bed. Oregon State Extension suggested this as an option for a reported seedling problem. It needs a hose and careful positioning; use it only where the spray will not create an unwanted problem for people nearby. This is a situation-specific suggestion, not a guaranteed fix for every yard. See the extension advice.
- Use scare devices as an experiment, not a promise. Reflective material, eye-spot balloons, or sound tactics may provide temporary relief, but crows can become accustomed to devices or noises that do not represent a real threat. Position any device with neighbors and passers-by in mind.
For a persistent or large-scale problem, contact local wildlife authorities or a qualified wildlife-control professional. Available assistance and local rules vary; guidance for one state should not be treated as universal legal advice.
Which response fits the problem?
| Problem | Practical first response | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit being eaten | Protect the shrub or tree with bird netting. | Indiana DNR recommends 4-inch mesh secured at the base; netting is available from hardware, garden, and farm-supply stores. |
| Seeds or seedlings being pulled up | Cage the bed or try a daytime motion-detection sprinkler. | These are Oregon State Extension suggestions for a reported planting problem; the sprinkler needs a hose and careful placement. |
| Garbage or pet food attracting birds | Secure the food source, including garbage lids, and avoid leaving food accessible. | This can reduce access to that attractant but will not prevent feeding on wild food or solve crop damage by itself. |
| Turf being dug | Confirm which animal is responsible and what it is searching for before selecting a deterrent. | Crows may search for invertebrates, but similar damage can come from other wildlife; digging alone does not establish a particular lawn pest. |
| Noise or a broader nuisance | Ask local wildlife authorities or a qualified professional about locally appropriate options. | Scare tactics may lose effect, and local rules and assistance differ. |
Are crows good or bad for a garden?
They can be either, sometimes in the same yard. Insects and carrion are part of their diet, while crops, seeds, and young plants may also become food. Judge their effect by the actual damage and benefits you observe, rather than assuming that every crow is either a garden helper or a pest.
