Some polyacrylamide hydrogel masks and similar products have been linked to severe, potentially fatal acrylamide poisoning in dogs. The concern is product-specific: formulations vary, and evidence about these products does not show that every reusable cold pack has the same risk.
What to do if your dog got into a cooling mask
- Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. ASPCA Poison Control lists 888-426-4435 for suspected exposure to cold or hot packs, cooling mats, therapeutic wraps, hydrogels, and gel-bead products. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Identify the product. Keep the packaging or take a photo of its label, including the ingredients and product name, if you can do so without delaying the call. ASPCApro recommends providing product and ingredient details when available.
- Describe what happened. Tell the professional whether the mask was chewed or punctured, whether any contents may have been swallowed, and what you have observed. Follow their instructions; do not try home treatment or induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.

Why some hydrogel masks are a concern
A peer-reviewed Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association case series published October 2, 2026, reviewed ASPCA Poison Control records from January 1, 2024, through June 1, 2026. It described 45 dogs with suspected acrylamide toxicosis after ingesting consumer polyacrylamide hydrogel migraine caps, eye masks, or wraps. In analyzed hydrogel samples, investigators measured acrylamide monomer concentrations of 12,900–51,800 parts per million (ppm). The authors characterized these products as a potentially life-threatening exposure.

Among the 21 dogs in that series with known outcomes, 14 died or were euthanized. These are outcomes among selected reported cases—not a fatality rate for all dogs that encounter a mask, and not a measure of the risk posed by every product. The series does not establish how common contamination is across products or the likelihood of poisoning after a particular exposure. Read the JAVMA case series.

In the JAVMA case series, reported signs included vomiting, a rapid heart rate (tachycardia), seizures, poor coordination (ataxia), tremors, anxiety, agitation, restlessness, aggression, panting, elevated body temperature, hypersensitivity, low blood pressure, and lethargy or depression. The report also noted findings such as low potassium, high blood glucose, and hemoconcentration on clinical testing.

- XL, Neck Girth 20.8-24.4 Inch. Please measure your dog’s neck before ordering to help the dog cooling bandana fits comfortably and securely. If your pet is in between sizes, choose the bigger size.
- Comfortable and non toxic: The fabric does not contain chemical products, safe and non-irritating.
- Keeps your pet cool for hours: It is made of cold-sensing technology fabric that resists heat and cools down.
- Tips: Puts it into the water, twist it, then put it into the fridge for 10 minutes and take it out. The cooling effect of the bandana will be more obvious.
- Applying cooling technology to this cool bandana, dog's skin heat goes out at once. Besides, the blue water ripples on it add a nice touch. Don't hesitate indulge your furry friends with this cool ice bandana.
This list cannot determine whether a dog has been poisoned, and the absence of these signs does not rule out exposure. If ingestion may have occurred, seek veterinary or poison-control guidance rather than waiting to use symptoms as a test.
Does this apply to every gel pack or cooling mask?
No. The evidence concerns certain consumer polyacrylamide-based hydrogel products, and ASPCApro cautions that formulations vary. Some packaging may list ingredients such as water, glycerol, and polyacrylamide without making residual acrylamide apparent from the general ingredient list. Labels that say “nontoxic” or “medical grade” should not be treated as proof that every formulation is harmless if swallowed.

A separate three-dog case report discussed by the American Animal Hospital Association involved four associated samples with acrylamide levels of 3,600–13,000 ppm. Those measurements are from a separate analysis and should not be combined with the 12,900–51,800 ppm range in the later 45-dog JAVMA series. Neither report establishes contamination prevalence across the consumer market or a safe ingestion threshold. AAHA’s coverage of the earlier report.
How to reduce the chance of access
- Store masks, wraps, and other gel products where dogs cannot reach them.
- Do not leave them unattended on beds, sofas, or other places a dog can access.
- Discard damaged items rather than leaving them available to chew.
These steps are general prevention guidance, not a certification that a particular container or storage product is pet-proof. AAHA’s coverage quotes veterinary toxicologist Renee Schmid describing masks left on beds and sofas as an access concern; this is her professional observation, not a measured trend statistic.
