What kind of dog is a German Longhaired Pointer?
This is a medium-sized, powerful, elegant gundog developed for work in fields, forests and water. The Kennel Club describes it as a dual-purpose pointer and retriever with a keen nose; the FCI standard likewise recognizes it as a versatile hunting dog. The breed’s working background matters at home: scent work, retrieving and consistent training can help give its energy and instincts a useful outlet. The Kennel Club breed standard was updated on 1 August 2025, and the German Longhaired Pointer Club notes a color amendment effective on that date.

How big does a German Longhaired Pointer get?
The Kennel Club standard sets ideal height ranges at 60–70 cm (24–28 in) for dogs and 58–66 cm (23–26 in) for bitches, with an approximate weight of 30 kg (66 lb). These are breed-standard measurements, not a guarantee that every individual will match them. The standard describes an energetic, balanced outline and a noble, elegant, powerfully built dog.

The coat on the back and sides is about 3–5 cm (1–2 in) long, close-fitting and supported by a good undercoat. Hair may be longer at the throat, chest and stomach, with feathering on the backs of the legs. How much exercise does a German Longhaired Pointer need?
The Kennel Club classifies the breed as needing more than two hours of exercise per day. That is a breed-profile guideline, not a prescription for every dog: age, health and conditioning affect what an individual can manage. The German Longhaired Pointer Club stresses daily exercise, space to run and opportunities to use hunting instincts. A brief walk alone is unlikely to meet the needs implied by that working background. The Kennel Club breed profile gives its exercise classification.
Purposeful activities can include gundog work, scent games, retrieving, agility and active family outings. Build the routine around the individual dog’s fitness, and pair physical activity with training or other tasks that engage its nose and attention. The breed club warns that a dog may become destructive if left alone for long periods.

Is a German Longhaired Pointer a good fit for your home?
The Kennel Club’s typical profile points to a large home and garden in a country setting. Those are indicators of the sort of environment that may suit an active working dog, rather than guarantees that a particular home will or will not work. Assess the time, space and daily routine you can offer before choosing this breed.
- Exercise time: Can you reliably provide substantial activity every day?
- Purposeful outlets: Can the dog regularly use its nose and work through retrieving, scent activities or gundog training?
- Training: Are you prepared to train consistently and positively?
- Coat care: Can you keep up with regular brushing and checks after outdoor activity?
- Company and space: Can the dog spend time with people and have suitable opportunities to move and explore?
The breed can take part in a range of activities, but its versatility does not remove the need for a suitable everyday routine.

How often should you groom a German Longhaired Pointer?
The Kennel Club recommends grooming more than once a week and classifies the breed as a shedder. A comb and soft slicker brush are useful tools. After outdoor work—particularly through heavy cover—check the coat, feathering and ears for debris or tangles. The American Kennel Club’s breed information also notes that working in varied terrain can mean extra coat upkeep.

The Kennel Club says its breed page does not currently single out breed-specific points for special attention by judges beyond routine breed-standard matters. That is not evidence that the breed has no health risks. The sources cited here do not establish a current breed-specific genetic or orthopedic screening panel. Ask a breeder about the individual dog’s health history and discuss appropriate preventive care with a veterinarian. - What is the dog’s current exercise and training routine, and how does it respond to new situations?
- What health history is available for this dog and its family?
- How will you provide daily activity, purposeful work and companionship as the dog matures?
- Can you maintain the coat and check it after outdoor work?
A breeder or rescue organization should be able to discuss the particular dog’s background and needs. Use that conversation alongside the breed’s general characteristics when deciding whether the match is right.
