Start with the question the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommends asking: What is best for your family? A German Shepherd needs daily activity, ongoing training and socialization, and routine care. If those needs fit your household, compare breeders by verifiable parent health records and transparent puppy-raising practices, then choose a puppy with the breeder’s help—not by color, size, or one lively greeting.

Is a German Shepherd the right fit for your household?

German Shepherds are active, athletic dogs that need both physical and mental exercise, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Individual dogs differ, but plan for daily activity, consistent training, socialization, grooming, and the time and veterinary budget required for a large dog. OFA identifies size, care requirements, activity level, and temperament as key factors when considering a breed.

Before contacting breeders, consider your schedule, living arrangements and local rules, experience with dogs, children and other animals at home, and ability to provide consistent care. A breeder can discuss a puppy’s likely fit, but only you can judge whether your household can meet its needs.

How can you tell if a breeder is responsible?

Look at the dogs and ask how puppies are raised

Visit the breeder’s home or kennel when possible. Look for a clean environment and adult dogs and puppies in good condition. Ask to meet at least one parent—ideally the dam—and ask about the goals of the pairing, health concerns in the family lines, puppy-raising and socialization practices, and how the breeder matches puppies to homes.

Ask for a written agreement and clear terms for support or taking the dog back if you can no longer keep it. Expect the breeder to ask about your home and plans, too. A polished website, registration, titles, or a directory listing does not establish that a breeder follows sound health or puppy-raising practices.

Verify parent health screening

The German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA) lists OFA hip and elbow evaluations, plus passing GSDCA Temperament Test results submitted to OFA, as its requirements for a Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) number. The club’s separate Health Award of Merit criteria also include OFA cardiac and thyroid tests and a published degenerative myelopathy (DM) test. These are distinct club criteria—not universal legal requirements. The GSDCA says DM DNA status does not disqualify a dog from that award.

Ask for each parent’s registered name or identifier and independently check the OFA records, or an applicable equivalent if the dogs were evaluated outside the United States. OFA cautions that young puppies cannot be screened for hip dysplasia, which makes parent and grandparent records important. A normal-looking dog or verbal assurance is not a substitute for documentation, and screening cannot guarantee that a puppy will be free of inherited or other health problems.

The GSDCA health and genetics information explains the club’s screening criteria. Its breeder directory can help you find names, but the club says it does not recommend or guarantee listed breeders. Verify records, claims, agreements, and practices yourself.

What should you look for in a puppy’s temperament?

The GSDCA breed standard describes the desired temperament as “direct and fearless, but not hostile”; it also calls for an approachable, confident dog. The standard says a German Shepherd should not be timid, shrink away, or show nervous reactions to unfamiliar sights or sounds. This is a description of the breed, not a validated test that predicts an individual puppy’s adult temperament.

Ask how the breeder has observed each puppy over time, including during ordinary handling, play, rest, and recovery after something new. If permitted, meet the litter in a calm setting and observe without trying to provoke a reaction. One encounter cannot establish which puppy will be the best adult dog. A highly energetic greeting is not proof of a good match, and assertiveness or aggression should not be mistaken for sound temperament.

How should a breeder socialize and match puppies?

Socialization starts with the breeder and continues after a puppy goes home. Ask what handling and age-appropriate experiences the litter has had with people, household sounds, and different surfaces, and how you can continue that exposure. AKC identifies the first three months as an especially important socialization period; plan gentle, positive experiences rather than uncontrolled contact with unfamiliar dogs.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) position statement recommends early, adequate socialization and positive training. It discusses supervised puppy classes as a way to socialize and learn, while advising that puppies be current on vaccinations and free of disease and parasites before attending. Avoid highly trafficked dog areas where animals’ health status is unknown. Ask your veterinarian how to balance local disease risks with your puppy’s vaccination schedule.

How to compare breeders and puppies

When you have more than one credible option, compare the evidence and fit rather than relying on a single signal such as price, titles, or the puppy that first runs to you.

What to compare What to look for Evidence to request
Household fit Activity, care, training, and socialization demands against your time and home A candid discussion with the breeder about your routine and goals
Parent health Hip and elbow evaluations and temperament testing; additional health testing and DM result context Verifiable records for identified dogs from OFA or an applicable equivalent
Breeder practices Transparency, adult-dog care, puppy raising, buyer screening, and support A visit, records, a written agreement, and direct answers
Puppy temperament and match Observed confidence and recovery over time, considered alongside your intended role for the dog The breeder’s observations and reasoning for the puppy-to-home match
Socialization Experiences already provided and a safe plan for continuing them Specific descriptions of handling and exposure, plus veterinary advice about class safety

These comparisons do not establish that one regional or working “line” is categorically healthier or more suitable than another.

What to ask the breeder before bringing your puppy home

  • What are the registered names or identifiers for the parents, and where can I verify their health records?
  • What health concerns have appeared in these lines, and which tests have the parents had?
  • How have you observed each puppy’s temperament, and what makes this puppy a fit for my household and goals?
  • What handling, people, household sounds, and surfaces have the puppies encountered?
  • What support does your written agreement provide, including if I cannot keep the dog?
  • What food is the puppy eating, and what health, vaccination, identification, and registration records will come home?

Plan the move home and first veterinary visit

OFA says puppies are ready for a new home at approximately eight weeks; AKC breeder guidance gives a general range of eight to twelve weeks. These are recommendations, not a universal legal rule. Check local requirements and follow your veterinarian’s advice for the individual puppy.

Before pickup, arrange veterinary care and ask about the exam, vaccines, parasites, diet transition, and preventive care. Get the breeder’s health and vaccination records, identification or microchip details if applicable, written contract, relevant registration paperwork, the food currently being fed, and an emergency contact. OFA recommends a prompt complete veterinary exam and puppy obedience classes after bringing a puppy home.
