A 2012 study of captive parrot records found a maximum of 92 years for a Moluccan cockatoo. That is an individual maximum, not a typical lifespan: ostriches and golden eagles also live for decades, and their figures vary substantially between the wild and human care.
How long do these birds live?
| Bird | Wild lifespan | Reported lifespan in human care | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parrots | Not stated in the cited study | 92 years for a Moluccan cockatoo | Maximum in a 2012 analysis of 83,212 captive-bird records spanning 260 parrot species; not a typical lifespan. |
| Ostrich | 30–40 years | Almost 70 years | Common ostrich lifespan figures from the Smithsonian National Zoo profile. |
| Golden eagle | 15–20 years (Oregon Zoo); up to 38 years in the wilderness (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance) | 68 years (Oregon Zoo); up to 50 years in expert care (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance) | Source-specific figures; zoo profiles report different captive maxima. |
The settings and measures are not interchangeable. A maximum age reached by one captive bird cannot be compared directly with a typical or wild lifespan for an entire species.
Which parrot lived the longest?
The 2012 Animal Conservation study by Young and colleagues found a maximum lifespan of 92 years for the Moluccan cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) in its captive-parrot dataset. The analysis covered 83,212 records across 260 species. It also found that median lifespans were generally shorter than popular assumptions, so 92 years should not be taken as a normal expectation for a pet parrot.
Guinness World Records identifies Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo, as its oldest-bird and oldest-parrot record holder. Cookie died on 27 August 2016 at 82 years and 89 days. This is a separately documented individual record; the study’s 92-year maximum and Cookie’s Guinness record come from different sources and record methods.

How long can an ostrich live?
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo gives the common ostrich lifespan as 30–40 years in the wild and almost 70 years in human care. That makes an ostrich a long-lived bird, but the cited figures do not exceed the documented parrot maximum.
How long can a golden eagle live?
Golden eagles usually live 15–20 years in the wild, according to the Oregon Zoo. Its profile reports 68 years in captivity. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance gives a different set of figures: up to 38 years in the wilderness and up to 50 years in expert care. These should be treated as source-specific reported maxima, not combined into a single definitive record.

Why maximum records can mislead
A maximum is the oldest known individual in a particular set of records. It does not tell you how long a typical bird lives. Median lifespan—the midpoint of recorded lifespans—and typical lifespan answer different questions, and both are generally lower than an exceptional maximum.
The U.S. Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory makes the distinction explicit: “The oldest bird ever banded is not necessarily of great value to those studying the age structure of a population, but it is of interest to many people.” A record can establish that an individual reached an age; it does not describe the whole population.

For parrots, the cited study found that larger species generally live longer, but that broad pattern does not make every large parrot a likely candidate to reach 90. Individual outcomes depend on species and circumstances, and the 92-year figure is a documented captive maximum for one species—not a promise or standard pet lifespan.
