When a Golden Retriever notices a leash lying on the ground mid-walk and picks it up, it can look as if he has decided the leash is his job now. That’s a funny, relatable reading of the moment—not proof of what the dog is thinking. A single clip can’t tell us why he picked it up.
Why might a dog pick up or carry a leash on a walk?
There isn’t enough information in this scene to identify this dog’s motive. Dogs may mouth or tug leashes in different situations, including play, frustration, boredom, or because they have not yet learned what leash-walking is supposed to look like. Those are possible explanations for leash mouthing in general, not a diagnosis of this particular dog.
The American Kennel Club discusses these different contexts and possible responses in its guide to leash tugging and biting. It does not analyze this dog or establish why he picked up the leash.
What to do if your dog regularly grabs the leash
If leash-grabbing is a recurring issue, focus on teaching the walking behavior you want rather than turning the leash into a tug game. The American Kennel Club’s guidance on polite leash walking recommends rewarding the dog for walking appropriately and waiting for the leash to become slack before continuing. A slack leash that hangs in a J shape is a useful visual cue.

For dogs that persistently bite or tug, the AKC also suggests offering an appropriate toy as an alternative to some dogs, and avoiding dangling the leash in a way that invites play. Keep the interaction calm and reward the behavior you want to see.
Does this scene mean the dog needs a different leash?
No replacement need is established by a dog picking up a leash once. Leash choice is a separate practical decision: visibility matters near roads, handler comfort affects how a leash feels to hold, and cleaning depends on the material. The AKC’s leash-selection guide covers those considerations.

For control, the AKC advises waiting until a dog can walk politely on a standard six-foot leash before using a retractable one; it also describes situations where a standard leash is preferable.
