How are goldfish classified?
The Natural History Museum lists Carassius auratus as a species in its freshwater fish records. In other words, goldfish are classified as freshwater fish; their ordinary habitat and care are not marine.

The USGS describes the species’ native range as eastern Asia, including China and possibly adjacent regions. It notes qualifications around the treatment of subspecies, so the precise boundaries should not be read as a simple, settled range map.
What freshwater habitats do goldfish live in?
According to the USGS, goldfish are typically found in quiet stream backwaters and pools, particularly where submerged aquatic vegetation grows. The profile also reports tolerance of conditions such as turbidity, temperature fluctuation and low dissolved oxygen. These are ecological observations, not a guide to aquarium conditions or a reason to let water quality deteriorate.

Can goldfish tolerate saltwater?
Goldfish are freshwater fish that can tolerate some brackish or saline conditions; that does not make them marine fish. The USGS profile reports captures at salinities as high as 17 parts per thousand and records of goldfish in some saline settings. It also cites a limit on prolonged exposure above 15 parts per thousand and reports adult performance across 0–6 parts per thousand.
Those figures describe observations summarized by the USGS, not universal thresholds for every fish or husbandry recommendations. They do not establish that goldfish can live safely in a marine aquarium. A fish’s ability to endure some salt exposure is different from being adapted to marine habitat.

What does this mean for a goldfish aquarium?
Keep goldfish in a properly maintained freshwater system. Aquarium planning should account for the fish’s size and waste load, with suitable filtration, stable water and regular testing. The Royal Veterinary College’s Goldfish Care factsheet, reviewed in December 2024, explains: “The filter will remove waste products and can provide aeration and good water circulation.”
- Use filtration appropriate to the aquarium’s fish and waste load, and establish filtration before adding fish.
- Test water regularly. Veterinary care guidance recommends checking ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and temperature; OATA also identifies water hardness as a useful parameter.
- Use freshwater test supplies and follow care guidance for the particular goldfish and aquarium. Salinity tolerance is not a substitute for filtration or routine water-quality checks.
How large and long-lived are goldfish?
The USGS profile summarizes typical reported adult size as 15–20 cm and 100–300 g, while noting reports up to 59 cm and 3.0 kg. It gives a typical lifespan of 6–7 years and records as long as 30 years. These are reported values summarized by USGS from cited works, not a prediction or guarantee for an individual pet.
