Goldfish Plants and Cats: What ASPCA’s Toxicity Listing Says

ASPCA lists Nematanthus spp. as non-toxic to cats, but a plant’s common name may not confirm its identity, and chewing can still cause gastrointestinal upset.

ASPCA lists Nematanthus spp. as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Its cat-safe plant list also names Gold-Fish Plant and Nematanthus spp. But the common name alone does not confirm that a particular houseplant is the listed species, and “non-toxic” does not mean chewing it cannot upset your cat’s stomach.

What does ASPCA’s listing say?

ASPCA Animal Poison Control classifies Nematanthus spp. as “Non-Toxic to Dogs, Non-Toxic to Cats.” Its cat plant list also includes Gold-Fish Plant, identified there as Hypocyrta nummularia, and Nematanthus spp. ASPCA’s Nematanthus listing gives Candy Corn Plant as another common name, lists Hypocyrta nummularia as the scientific name, and identifies the family as Gesneriaceae. ASPCA’s cat plant list includes both Gold-Fish Plant and Nematanthus as non-toxic to cats.

Does every plant sold as a goldfish plant match that listing?

Not necessarily. “Goldfish plant” is a common name, and the ASPCA pages do not establish that every plant marketed under it is Nematanthus spp. or Hypocyrta nummularia. Check the botanical name on the plant tag or ask the seller or a knowledgeable plant professional to identify it. If you cannot confirm the identity, do not assume the ASPCA listing applies to your plant.

Can a non-toxic plant still make a cat sick?

Yes. ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs, including plants listed as non-toxic. The classification is about toxicity; it is not a promise that a cat can chew the plant without symptoms. ASPCA also notes that its plant list is not all-inclusive and that individual plants may look different from the listing photos. ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant guidance explains these limits.

What should you do if your cat chews one?

  1. Identify the plant. Keep its tag or record its botanical name, if available. If the identity is uncertain, tell the veterinary professional that it was sold as a goldfish plant.
  2. Contact a veterinarian if your cat is ill or you suspect ingestion of a poisonous substance. ASPCA advises contacting a local veterinarian or its 24-hour Animal Poison Control hotline at (888) 426-4435. Consultation fees may apply; ask when you call.
  3. Do not try home treatment based on the common name. Share what you know about the plant and your cat’s condition with the veterinarian or poison-control service and follow their instructions.
