Poecilotheria metallica, the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental, is a 16–18 cm-class arboreal tarantula prized for metallic blue coloring and geometric cream, yellow and white markings. It is usually smaller than the largest members of its genus, such as P. ornata and P. rufilata, but it is still a fast Old World species whose bites can cause severe, prolonged symptoms. The practical answer for keepers is straightforward: choose it for display, not handling; provide a secure vertical enclosure with an elevated cork or bamboo retreat; keep moisture moderate with strong ventilation; and buy only well-documented captive-bred stock where legal. The comparisons below explain how its size, color, behavior and care differ from other Poecilotheria.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| P. metallica (Gooty Sapphire Ornamental) | Experienced keepers wanting a striking display arboreal | About 16–18 cm; published upper figures 7–8 inches; metallic blue with cream, yellow and white markings; fast and defensive when pressured | Nov 2026 |
| P. regalis | Keepers seeking the classic, comparatively approachable Poecilotheria | Described by Northwest Zoological Supply as a classic species and possibly the best beginner choice within the genus; exact adult size not stated in the supplied care guidance | Nov 2026 |
| P. ornata | Keepers prepared for one of the largest arboreal species | Leg span can exceed 8–9 inches; can be more agitated and defensive than calmer individuals of some species | Nov 2026 |
| P. rufilata | Keepers wanting a very large arboreal tarantula | Leg span can exceed 8–9 inches; adult dimensions and temperament vary by individual | Nov 2026 |
| P. fasciata | Experienced keepers comfortable with a more reactive species | Northwest Zoological Supply describes it as potentially more agitated and defensive; exact size not stated in the supplied guidance | Nov 2026 |
What makes the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental different from other Poecilotheria?
P. metallica combines a relatively moderate size for the genus with an unusually vivid blue adult appearance. Its body and legs are described as bright or metallic blue, overlaid with cream, yellow or white geometric patterning. Many other Poecilotheria are dominated by brown, gray, red or less saturated patterning, so the color contrast is the easiest visual clue.

It is an Old World, arboreal tarantula from southern India, associated with restricted dry-deciduous forest in Andhra Pradesh and the Eastern Ghats. In the wild it uses tree hollows, a behavior that explains why a tall enclosure with an elevated retreat works better than a flat terrestrial setup.
Common names are reused in the hobby. Confirm the binomial name, Poecilotheria metallica, on an invoice, label and any breeding records rather than relying on “Gooty blue” or another seller-created name. Correct identification matters for care, legal paperwork and conservation records, especially because hybrids occur in private collections.

How big does P. metallica get?
Plan for an adult in the 16–18 cm (roughly 6–7 inch) range, while recognizing that published upper figures reach 7–8 inches. Monkfield lists potential adult size up to 8 inches, Fear Not gives 5–7 inches, Appalachian Tarantulas gives 7–8 inches, and The Tarantula Den gives about 16–18 cm. These are overlapping estimates, not a guaranteed maximum.
Measurements differ because sellers and care sheets may use different conventions, and sex and individual growth affect the result. A female can live roughly 10–15 or more years according to several care references; Monkfield gives up to 12 years. Males are shorter-lived, commonly around three to five years, with Monkfield listing up to five. A keeper should therefore design the adult enclosure for a substantial female even if starting with a small sling.

Within the genus, P. ornata and P. rufilata are often placed among the largest arboreal tarantulas, with leg spans capable of exceeding 8–9 inches according to Northwest Zoological Supply. That makes P. metallica somewhat smaller than those species in many collections, but not small: a 16–18 cm spider still needs a tall, escape-resistant enclosure and careful access planning.
What does size mean for enclosure planning?
Size is not just a display measurement. A large arboreal spider can reach the lid, door or keeper’s hand in a single burst. The enclosure must let you reach the water dish, remove prey and close the door without cornering the spider. Oversizing a sling enclosure can make monitoring and feeding difficult, while an undersized adult enclosure leaves no room for a proper retreat.
How blue does P. metallica become, and how is it identified?
Spiderlings may begin lavender and become progressively bluer through molts. Adults are described as bright or metallic blue, with cream, white or yellow geometric marks. Fear Not notes that adult females often show more defined markings and may fade toward gray with age, so a mature female does not always retain the same intensity seen in a freshly molted photograph.
Color alone is not proof of identity. Ask for the scientific name, locality or breeding-line information and, where available, parent details. Compare several photographs taken after a molt rather than one heavily edited image. Lighting, camera white balance and a recently shed exoskeleton can all change how blue the spider appears.

Is a Gooty Sapphire Ornamental beginner-friendly?
For a first tarantula, generally no. Northwest Zoological Supply describes P. regalis as the classic species and possibly the best beginner choice within the genus, while placing P. metallica among arboreals that can be calmer when left unprovoked. That relative calm is not a handling guarantee: Fear Not calls P. metallica very fast and defensive, and The Tarantula Den describes it as very fast, alert and defensive when pressured.
Old World tarantulas lack the convenient beginner margin associated with many slower New World species. A startled P. metallica may sprint upward, sideways or out of an open door before a keeper can react. Individual temperament varies, and a spider that remains in its retreat during routine maintenance may still bolt when the retreat is disturbed.
How do the main comparison species differ in behavior?
- P. metallica: Often described as comparatively calmer among arboreals if left alone, but very fast and capable of defensive behavior when pressured.
- P. regalis: Described as a classic species and possibly the best beginner option within Poecilotheria; that is a relative assessment, not a promise of docility.
- P. fasciata and P. ornata: Northwest Zoological Supply warns that these can be more agitated and defensive.
- P. rufilata: Its very large adult size increases the consequences of an escape; the supplied guidance does not establish a universal temperament.
Species labels cannot replace a secure enclosure, a rehearsed maintenance routine and a plan for an escaped spider. Select the individual and species you can safely house rather than the one with the most appealing photograph.
Is it safe to handle P. metallica?
No routine handling should be part of this species’ care plan. Monkfield warns that a bite can cause excruciating pain, nausea and cramping lasting many weeks, and states that handling is not recommended. Fear Not and The Tarantula Den likewise emphasize speed, defensiveness and potentially medically significant bites. Northwest Zoological Supply recommends minimal interaction for arboreal Old World tarantulas even when an individual appears calm.
Use a catch cup, a soft paintbrush or other long tool, and a second container when moving the spider. Keep the replacement enclosure assembled before opening the old one. Work with doors closed elsewhere in the room, remove obstacles from the floor and avoid maintenance when children, pets or distractions are present. If a bite occurs, move away from the enclosure, seek medical advice promptly and tell clinicians the species if known; symptom severity and duration can vary.
What enclosure does P. metallica need?
Use a vertically oriented, escape-resistant enclosure with cross-ventilation and structure in the upper half. One current care guide lists 12 × 12 × 18 inches as an adult minimum and 5 × 5 × 8 inches for juveniles. Treat those dimensions as starting guidance rather than a universal formula: the spider’s size, retreat design, ventilation and your ability to service the enclosure determine whether a particular model is suitable.

- Choose vertical proportions. Arboreal height allows a tree-hollow retreat and web anchors. A tall empty box is not enough; usable structure matters more than unused air space.
- Add an upright retreat. Secure a cork-bark tube, bamboo section or similar hollow vertically. The opening should be accessible from above or the side, and the material must not wobble when the spider pulls against it.
- Create web anchors. Position bark, branches or other stable surfaces so the spider can connect the retreat to the walls and ceiling. Avoid sharp edges and unstable pieces that could fall.
- Install a water source. Provide a clean dish for animals large enough to use one, positioned where it can be reached without forcing contact.
- Test access before adding the spider. Confirm that you can reach the dish, remove dead prey and close every panel while standing to one side of the opening.
- Scale housing as the spider grows. Slings and juveniles are easier to monitor in appropriately sized enclosures. Move them before the retreat becomes cramped, but do not transfer them simply to create a larger display.
“Vertical arboreal tarantula enclosure” is the most direct equipment description for this setup. Related essentials include a cork-bark tube for an arboreal tarantula and a digital hygrometer, provided the products are sized and positioned for safe access.
What temperature, humidity and ventilation are appropriate?
Published figures vary. Monkfield lists a 24–29°C (75–84°F) background temperature, 20–24°C (68–75°F) at night and 70–80% humidity. Appalachian Tarantulas gives 75–85°F and 70–80% humidity. The Tarantula Den recommends 20–27°C with moderate moisture and strong ventilation, warning against stagnant or swampy conditions.

The practical overlap is stable room warmth, a dependable water source, moderate moisture and strong airflow. Do not seal the enclosure to trap humidity, and do not keep the substrate permanently saturated. Northwest Zoological Supply advises allowing surfaces to dry between watering events because stagnant conditions create problems.
- Measure temperature and humidity at the spider’s level rather than next to a heat source or on the room wall.
- Use ventilation openings on more than one side when the enclosure design allows it, creating airflow instead of a single passive vent.
- Add moisture in controlled amounts and let wet surfaces dry before watering again.
- Keep the water dish clean and refill it before it becomes empty; the dish is a safer moisture reserve than a constantly soaked substrate.
- Watch the spider and enclosure together: condensation that does not clear, sour odors or persistently wet substrate indicate inadequate airflow or excessive watering.
These ranges are care-sheet guidance, not a reason to chase a precise percentage. Stability and ventilation are more important than holding the enclosure at the top of a published humidity range.
What should a Gooty Sapphire Ornamental eat?
Suitable prey listed by care sources includes crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms and dubia roaches. Match prey size to the spider, offer more frequently to actively growing juveniles and adjust adult feeding to appetite and abdomen condition rather than a rigid calendar.
- Offer one appropriately sized feeder in the evening or at another consistent time when the tarantula is likely to be active.
- Observe from outside the enclosure; do not prod the spider to make it eat.
- Remove ignored live prey, especially when the spider is approaching a molt. A cricket left with a vulnerable, freshly molted tarantula can injure it.
- Record feeding and molts so you can distinguish a normal fasting period from a change that warrants closer examination.
Provide clean drinking water for specimens large enough to use a dish. A tarantula may refuse food before a molt, after a molt or during environmental adjustment; a temporary fast is not, by itself, a reason to force-feed or repeatedly disturb the retreat.

How should routine maintenance be done without handling?
Prepare tools before opening the enclosure and keep your hands out of the spider’s route. Replace water, remove prey remains and spot-clean reachable areas with long tools. If the spider occupies the doorway or the only route to the dish, close the enclosure and wait rather than pushing it aside.
For a full transfer, place the new enclosure beside the old one, open both only when the room is secure and use a catch cup and soft brush to guide the spider. Do not rely on speed or a bare-handed grab. A second person can watch the floor and door, but should not crowd the working area.
Inspect latches, ventilation panels and cable openings after every service. Arboreal tarantulas can exploit surprisingly small gaps, and a loose door is a greater immediate risk than a slightly imperfect humidity reading.

The species is associated with a restricted dry-deciduous-forest range in Andhra Pradesh and the Eastern Ghats. A U.S. regulatory technical account describes its rediscovery in that region and its use of tree hollows. Appalachian Tarantulas describes the wild species as critically endangered. EAZA documents an ex situ programme and notes that hybrids occur in private collections.

For a buyer, that translates into practical checks:
- Prefer a clearly documented captive-bred animal over an undocumented wild-caught specimen.
- Request the scientific name and any available parent, locality or breeding-line records.
- Do not mix an animal of uncertain identity into a breeding project advertised as pure.
- Keep your own purchase, molt and breeding records so later owners can verify provenance.
What legal checks are required before purchase or shipment?
A CITES CoP18 proposal names P. metallica and other Poecilotheria among taxa proposed for Appendix II because trade controls were considered necessary to reduce wild-harvest risks. Under CITES, Appendix II international exports generally require an export permit or re-export certificate, and national laws can be stricter. The current CITES appendices page is marked valid from 5 March 2026.

Before paying or arranging transport, check the live CITES appendices, your country’s implementing rules and any state, provincial or local restrictions. Ask the seller which authority issues required documents, whether the paperwork covers the exact scientific name and whether permits are needed for both export and import. A shipment that is legal in the seller’s country may still be prohibited at the destination.
How should you choose between P. metallica and another Poecilotheria?
Start with husbandry and risk tolerance, then consider color. Choose P. metallica if you can maintain a tall, well-ventilated enclosure, accept a hands-off display animal and verify captive-bred provenance. Consider P. regalis if you want the species most often described as the comparatively approachable introduction to this genus, while still accepting Old World speed. Choose P. ornata or P. rufilata only if you have room and procedures for an arboreal spider that may exceed 8–9 inches. Treat P. fasciata as a choice for an experienced keeper prepared for potentially greater defensive reactivity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse these decision checks before acquisition:
- Can every household member follow a no-handling rule?
- Can you lock the enclosure and prevent accidental opening?
- Do you have a catch cup, long tools and a spare enclosure ready?
- Can you source suitable feeders and maintain clean water without disturbing the retreat?
- Have you confirmed current legal requirements and documented captive-bred origin?
- Are you prepared for a female’s decade-plus lifespan and a male’s much shorter adult lifespan?
What are the most common care mistakes?
- Choosing by color alone: A blue photograph does not reveal speed, bite risk, adult size or provenance.
- Building a tall but empty enclosure: Without a secure upper retreat and web anchors, the spider cannot use the vertical space effectively.
- Sealing in humidity: Permanently wet substrate and stagnant air are more dangerous than a moderate, ventilated setup.
- Handling a calm specimen: A spider that stays still today can bolt when its retreat is opened tomorrow.
- Leaving live prey during premolt: Remove ignored feeders promptly.
- Assuming a common name proves identity: Confirm P. metallica and preserve origin records.
- Ignoring paperwork until shipping day: CITES and national rules may require permits before the animal moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a Gooty Sapphire Ornamental live in captivity?
Published care sheets commonly place females at roughly 10–15 or more years, with one sheet listing up to 12 years. Males generally live about three to five years, so sex and maturity at purchase strongly affect the commitment.
Can I keep two Gooty Sapphire Ornamentals together?
No. The supplied husbandry guidance treats this as a solitary tarantula, and communal housing would create avoidable injury and cannibalism risks. Keep each spider in its own escape-proof enclosure.
Why has my blue tarantula turned gray?
Adult females may fade toward gray with age, according to Fear Not, and color also changes around molts and under different lighting. A gradual shift is not proof that the spider is a different species; verify the original identification and watch for normal premolt signs.
What should I do if my P. metallica escapes?
Close the room, block door gaps and keep children and pets out. Use a catch cup and long tool to guide the spider into a container rather than chasing it; once contained, secure the enclosure and inspect every latch and cable opening before returning it.
Is a sling enclosure really different from an adult setup?
The same arboreal principles apply, but a juvenile enclosure should be scaled to the spider and easier to monitor. One current guide lists 5 × 5 × 8 inches for juveniles versus 12 × 12 × 18 inches as an adult starting minimum.
