Keep Halloween safe for dogs and cats by securing candy, giving pets a quiet place away from the door, and keeping hazards such as flames and wires out of reach. Costumes and outdoor outings are optional; your pet’s comfort and security come first.
1. Put candy, gum, and wrappers out of reach
Store Halloween candy and other treats in a closed cupboard or container your pet cannot access. Chocolate can be harmful to both dogs and cats. Xylitol-sweetened candy is a serious danger to dogs, and raisins can also pose a poisoning risk. Wrappers may cause problems if swallowed, while eating too many treats can make pets ill. Pet Poison Helpline lists these among common Halloween food hazards in its Halloween safety guidance.
If you think your pet has eaten candy, a wrapper, or another potentially toxic item, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. The ASPCA lists Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 on its Halloween safety page; confirm current contact details when you need them.
2. Set up a quiet room away from the front door
For most pets, a comfortable room away from the busiest visitor traffic is safer than greeting trick-or-treaters. The door may open repeatedly, creating a chance for a pet to slip outside, and the noise and unfamiliar visitors can be stressful. The ASPCA recommends that all but the most social pets stay in a separate comfortable room during peak trick-or-treating hours.

- Choose a room your pet already knows, with water, bedding, and a familiar place to settle.
- Close the door securely before visitors arrive.

3. Dress your pet only if they are comfortable
A costume is not necessary for Halloween. The ASPCA advises against dressing a dog or cat unless the animal is known to enjoy it. A simple bandana may be a less restrictive alternative, but skip even that if your pet dislikes wearing it.

4. Keep flames, wires, and small decorations inaccessible
Place candles, lit pumpkins, electrical cords, and small decorations where pets cannot reach, chew, knock them over, or swallow them. A flame can cause burns or start a fire; chewing a wire can cause electrical injury; and small items can become choking or ingestion hazards. Pet Poison Helpline also notes costume and candle hazards in its seasonal guidance.

If you take your pet outside after dark, use a secure leash and a reflective collar, and make sure your pet is wearing proper identification. These precautions improve visibility and make it easier for someone to identify your pet if you become separated. They do not make an outing necessary: keeping your pet indoors is a reasonable choice if Halloween activity would be stressful or difficult to manage.

The ASPCA recommends a reflective collar, secure leash, and proper identification for pets taken outside after dark. A collar with an ID tag is one way to carry that information, but it cannot guarantee your pet will be returned if lost.
