Healthy Puppy Checklist: 15 Steps Before You Choose

Choosing a healthy puppy takes more than a quick look. Check household fit, source transparency, veterinary and screening records, visible condition, and plan a prompt independent exam.

There is no way to certify a puppy’s health by looking at it. A careful choice combines household fit, a transparent breeder or rescue, verifiable health records, observations of the puppy and its environment, and an independent veterinary exam soon after placement. Use these 15 steps to make a better-informed decision—not to diagnose a puppy yourself.

1. Decide whether you can meet a dog’s needs

Before looking at puppies, consider the daily care and long-term commitment a dog requires. Factor in time for companionship, exercise, training, grooming and routine veterinary care, as well as the possibility of emergencies. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s guide to selecting a pet dog advises prospective owners to think through the responsibilities and costs of care. Appearance alone is not a sound reason to choose.

2. Match the puppy to your household

Consider the dog’s likely adult size, temperament and activity needs alongside your home, schedule and experience. Think about children, older people and other pets in the household, and whether someone can provide care and companionship throughout the day. The CDC’s dog guidance recommends considering a dog’s needs and how they fit your family and lifestyle.

3. Learn about the breed or mix

If you are considering a purebred puppy, research health conditions associated with that breed and ask a veterinarian or relevant breed health authority which screening tests are appropriate for the parents. Recommendations can depend on breed and lineage. A breed label does not predict an individual puppy’s health or temperament; for a mixed-breed puppy, ask what is known about its background without treating uncertain ancestry as a diagnosis.

4. Choose a source that is willing to be transparent

Consider responsible breeders, shelters and rescue groups, and ask what is known about the puppy’s origin and history. An organization’s label or an online listing does not, by itself, establish that the puppy was well cared for. Merck Veterinary Manual’s guide to selecting a dog recommends investigating the source and, when possible, observing where puppies are kept. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s buyer guidance also emphasizes asking about origin and records.

5. Ask questions before visiting or paying

Ask the breeder, shelter or rescue:

  • Where did the puppy come from, and where has it been raised?
  • What veterinary care has it received, and can you see the dated records?
  • What is known about its health, behavior and early experiences?
  • What support, health terms and return arrangements are offered?

Ask follow-up questions when an answer is vague. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s guide to selecting a purebred puppy includes questions to discuss with breeders. For any source, the answers and supporting evidence matter more than reassuring claims.

6. Request veterinary records and parent screening evidence

Ask to review dated records of the puppy’s veterinary care, including vaccinations and parasite control. If relevant breed screening is recommended, request the actual parental test results or certificates—not just a verbal assurance that the parents are healthy. Ask what test was performed and have your veterinarian help interpret the result. VCA’s breeder guidance and the British Veterinary Association’s advice on breeder questions recommend checking relevant health documentation. Registry status alone is not a health assessment; Cornell explains this limitation in its guidance on selecting a purebred puppy.

7. See the puppy in its usual setting when possible

When practical, observe where the puppy and litter are being raised. Look for a reasonably clean, organized space, access to fresh water and puppies that appear cared for. A source that insists on a neutral meeting or shipping instead of allowing you to see the setting warrants careful scrutiny, but this is a warning sign to investigate, not proof of wrongdoing. Merck and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency both advise buyers to pay attention to a source’s transparency and the conditions in which dogs are kept.

8. Observe behavior in context

Notice whether the puppy is alert, curious and engaging in play appropriate to its age and circumstances. A brief meeting cannot predict all future behavior. Fearfulness or an aggressive response should be considered in context—such as the setting, handling and the puppy’s comfort—and discussed with the source rather than treated as a complete temperament assessment. Merck’s dog-selection guidance recommends observing a dog while recognizing that behavior must be interpreted carefully.

9. Check visible condition without trying to diagnose

Observe the puppy’s body condition, coat, skin, eyes, ears, breathing and general cleanliness. Signs such as marked lethargy, diarrhea, coughing, eye or nose discharge, sores, parasites, painful ears or visibly poor body condition are reasons to pause and seek veterinary assessment. An alert puppy with a clean coat is encouraging, but neither observation rules out illness or inherited conditions. The CDC and Merck describe signs to watch for; a visual check cannot replace a veterinary examination.

10. Ask about the mother and family history

Ask whether you can meet the puppy’s mother and what is known about health problems in the family line. Seeing the mother may help you understand the puppy’s environment and some family context, but it cannot establish the puppy’s future health. The sire may not live at the same premises. Cornell and VCA both recommend asking about parents and relevant health history.

11. Ask how the puppy is being socialized

Ask what people, sounds, handling, play and everyday routines the puppy has experienced, and how the source supports age-appropriate development. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s “Selecting a Dog” handout says: “Proper socialization of puppies during the critical socialization period (6-14 weeks of age) has a big impact on your dog’s behavior for the rest of its life.” This is guidance about timing, not a guarantee of a particular outcome. Ask your veterinarian how to continue safe exposure in view of the puppy’s age, vaccination status and local disease risks.

12. Read the contract and understand the support offered

Before agreeing to take the puppy, read the contract and clarify health terms, return arrangements and what support the source will provide after placement. A health guarantee is a contract term; it does not prove a puppy is disease-free. Cornell, VCA and the American Kennel Club’s breeder-question guidance discuss written terms and breeder practices. Make sure you understand what any promise covers and what steps it requires.

13. Do not let urgency replace verification

Pause if a source will not answer reasonable questions, share available records or explain where the puppy was raised. Online photos and pressure to pay quickly do not establish a puppy’s health. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises buyers to ask questions before buying or adopting; take time to verify the answers rather than letting a deadline make the decision for you.

14. Arrange a veterinary visit promptly after placement

Plan an independent veterinary examination as soon as possible after bringing the puppy home. The CDC suggests a veterinary visit within a few days to a week after adoption, while the AVMA advises scheduling an examination as soon as possible. These are recommendations for prompt follow-up, not substitutes for care if the puppy seems unwell; contact a veterinarian sooner if you have an urgent concern.

15. Bring the records and follow an individual care plan

Bring all available veterinary records, including vaccination and deworming history, to the appointment. Ask the veterinarian to assess the puppy and recommend a plan for immunization, parasite control, nutrition, socialization and other care based on the puppy’s history and local conditions. Vaccination schedules, disease risks and legal requirements vary by location, so follow local veterinary advice.

How to compare puppies or sources

If you are deciding among several candidates, compare each using the same considerations rather than reducing the decision to one “healthy” score:

  • Fit with your household, including energy level and observed temperament.
  • Transparency about origin and the conditions in which the puppy was raised.
  • Completeness and verifiability of the puppy’s veterinary records.
  • Relevant parental screening evidence and whether the results are understood.
  • Visible condition and behavior, interpreted as observations rather than diagnoses.
  • Socialization practices and support after placement.
  • Clarity of contract, return and follow-up terms.

Use these points to identify what is known and what still needs a veterinary answer. No pre-purchase checklist can rule out infectious, congenital or inherited disease.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
