Yes—pets can still have rewards while losing weight, but snacks must fit the animal’s calorie plan. Ask your veterinarian for the daily target, count treat calories, and use modest portions. Set a treat budget before choosing snacks
VCA recommends that treats, snacks, and people foods make up no more than 10% of a pet’s daily calories. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises keeping treats below 10% of daily calorie needs. These are general limits, not a weight-loss prescription: have your veterinary team set your pet’s daily calorie target and decide how treats fit within it.
During weight reduction, the total calories for the day matter more than the number of treats. A reward that seems small can add up, particularly when several family members offer snacks. Track what is given and include any extras in the plan.
Dog snacks that can fit a weight-loss plan
Plain vegetables
The AVMA lists crunchy, uncooked baby carrots, broccoli, celery, and green beans as nutritious, low-calorie alternatives for dogs. VCA also describes fresh, frozen, or plainly cooked fruits and vegetables as possible low-calorie treats in moderation. Start with modest portions and ask your veterinarian whether a particular food suits your dog.

Commercial dog treats
VCA describes low-calorie commercial dog treats as having fewer than 15 calories per piece. Treat that as a general description, not a guarantee of suitability. Check the current package for calories per piece or serving, then compare that number with your dog’s allowance. Pieces and serving sizes vary, so counting treats without checking calories can be misleading.

If you are comparing products, the low-calorie dog treat category is one place to review options. Compare the label’s calories per piece and ingredients, and ask your veterinary team about suitability for your dog rather than relying on a marketing label.
Use part of the regular food ration as a reward
Set aside a portion of your dog’s already-allocated daily food for rewards during training or play. This can avoid adding snack calories, provided you subtract that portion from meals rather than feeding it on top. VCA recommends coordinating treats with a dog’s weight-reduction plan.

Why cats need a different approach
Do not assume that dog snack examples or dog treat calorie guidance apply to cats. The cited cat guidance focuses on safe, supervised weight loss rather than providing a cat produce list. VCA warns that an obese cat should not be put on a diet without veterinary supervision: weight loss that is too rapid or based on inappropriate food can be dangerous.
Ask your veterinarian to set your cat’s feeding plan and identify acceptable rewards. Do not restrict food or add unfamiliar snacks to an overweight cat’s routine without that guidance.

Check suitability before adding a snack
- Confirm the pet’s daily calorie target and how much of it can go to treats.
- Read packaged-food labels for calories per piece or serving, not just the serving’s appearance or size.
- Keep produce plain and portions modest; count any additions or other extras.
- Check specific foods with your veterinarian, especially for cats, pets with medical conditions, or animals on restricted diets. The examples here are not a comprehensive list of foods safe for every pet.
