What this story can—and cannot—tell you
The three weeks before this cat left his hiding place and the months before his first pet describe one foster experience. They are not an average or a promise about how long another cat will take. The story is a human-interest account, not a controlled study of feline behavior.
The Border Collie’s role is also an anecdote, not evidence that bringing a dog near a fearful cat is a treatment. The behavior guidance described by the ASPCA instead emphasizes gradual, low-pressure interactions and rewards. Do not introduce a dog as a way to make a cat less fearful.

How to help a shy foster or rescue cat feel safer
Set up a calm starter space
Give the cat a quiet room where it can settle without being chased or crowded. Provide places to hide at floor level and, if safe and practical, elevated resting spots. A hiding place is a refuge; let the cat use it rather than pulling it out. Use treats or toys as optional rewards
If the cat is willing to eat or play, a small treat or favorite toy can make your presence more rewarding. Keep the interaction mild and allow the cat to retreat; do not use food or play to lure it into contact it is not ready for.
