Heavy panting, weakness, abnormal gum color, vomiting, confusion, collapse, or seizures call for prompt attention. If you suspect heatstroke, start safe cooling and contact a veterinary hospital immediately—do not wait to see whether your pet improves at home.
How can I tell if my pet is overheating?
Overheating can range from temporary discomfort to heatstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition that can damage organs. Animals do not all show the same progression or combination of signs, so take concerning changes seriously.
Early signs to watch for
- Seeking shade or lying down during activity.
- Excessive panting, a red tongue or gums, or thick, sticky saliva.
- Anxiousness, restlessness, or unusual behavior.
Signs that need urgent attention
- Weakness, lethargy, or difficulty breathing.
- Heavy drooling, muscle tremors, vomiting, or diarrhea, which can sometimes be bloody.
- Unsteadiness, incoordination, confusion, or abnormal gum or tongue color.
- Collapse, unconsciousness, or seizures.
Contact a veterinary hospital promptly for suspected heat illness. Collapse, seizures, severe breathing difficulty, or worsening signs are emergencies.
Can pets get heatstroke when it isn’t extremely hot?
Yes. Heat risk depends on more than the outdoor temperature: humidity, activity, access to shade and water, ventilation, and time in an enclosed hot space all matter. Kimberly Lutz, DVM, CVMA, an associate veterinarian at Craig Road Animal Hospital, told the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), “It doesn’t even need to be extreme heat for this to happen, especially with susceptible enough dogs.” AAHA’s heatstroke guidance discusses the risk and warning signs.

AAHA’s 2026 prevention guidance advises considering heatstroke risk any time the temperature is above 80°F or humidity is high. Treat that as a precaution, not a universal safe-or-unsafe line: an animal can be at risk under different conditions, depending on its health and exposure.
Pets that need extra caution
- Short-muzzled (brachycephalic) dogs and cats, which may have difficulty cooling themselves by panting.
- Overweight animals, very young pets, and senior pets.
- Pets with heart, respiratory, kidney, or other health conditions.
Be particularly watchful during walks and play, while traveling, and in sunrooms, garages, or enclosed porches. Ask your veterinarian about your individual pet’s exercise limits and warm-weather needs.

How do I keep my pet safe on a hot day?
Plan activity around cooler conditions
- Walk, run, and play during cooler morning or evening hours. Reduce strenuous activity in hot or humid weather and take frequent breaks.
- Avoid hot asphalt and other heated surfaces. AAHA suggests cautiously checking pavement with the back of your hand for several seconds; this is a rough check, not a guarantee that a route is safe.
- Leave pets at home during errands when possible. Never leave an animal alone in a parked car, even in the shade or with the windows cracked.
Provide water, shade, and airflow
- Keep fresh water available and provide shade and ventilation outdoors.
- Make sure your pet can reach a cool indoor area and has opportunities to rest.
- For comfort, AAHA lists cooling mats, damp towels, fans, and pet-safe cooling vests as possible aids. They do not replace shade, fresh water, reduced activity, or emergency care.
Ask your veterinarian whether warm-weather grooming, sunscreen, or paw protection is appropriate for your pet. Product fit and suitability vary by animal; do not assume that clothing or gear prevents heat illness.
What should I do if my pet may have heatstroke?
Begin cooling while arranging immediate veterinary care. Do not wait to see if home cooling is enough, and do not delay contacting or traveling to a veterinary hospital to take a temperature.

- Instant Cooling, Rapid Relief: Made with Q-Max > 0.5 cool-touch fabric, this mat delivers an instant cooling sensation as soon as your pet lies down—no plug, water, or gel needed, safe and worry-free. Please note: the mat is not an active cooler; prolonged lying may cause slight warming as it absorbs body heat, which is a normal physical property. Simply have your pet move away briefly; the mat then dissipates heat through air convection and resumes cooling, allowing for a cycle of reuse. Placing it in a well-ventilated area speeds up the cooling recovery. Especially ideal for active dogs that sweat easily or need rapid cooling after exercise.
- Breathes Easy, Stays Comfy: Say goodbye to stuffy, uncomfortable naps! Our lightweight, breathable fabric combined with premium bonded fiber filling promotes continuous air flow, helping your pet release excess heat effectively. Better ventilation means faster cooling recovery – even if the dog mat has warmed up, good airflow helps it bounce back quickly. Instant coolness, cycling comfort – a dry, pleasant retreat for your furry friend.
- Safety Certified, Non‑Slip Design: Certified to OEKO‑TEX STANDARD 100, this mat is free from plugs and gels, made with materials that are safe and non‑hazardous for your pet. The non‑slip dot pattern on the underside keeps the mat firmly in place on any floor, ensuring your companion stays comfortable and secure at all times.
- Effortless Clean, Always Fresh: Simplify your life! This pad is conveniently machine washable and dryer safe (low heat), making cleanup a breeze. Ditch the scrubbing – enjoy a fresh, clean mat with minimal effort, every time.
- Versatile Comfort, Everywhere They Go: Find the perfect fit! Available in multiple sizes as a cooling blanket or mat for cats, puppies, medium, and large dogs. It's especially ideal for heat-prone active breeds or long-haired pals. Whether it's a scorching day, a summer night's sleep, car rides, crate training, or adding a cozy spot to their favorite corner, this is a comfort companion for every adventure and quiet moment at home.
- Move your pet to a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place.
- Contact a veterinary hospital right away and arrange prompt assessment.
- Start gentle cooling. Wet your pet with cool or tepid water and use a fan to support evaporation. AAHA advises against ice or cold water and against wrapping the animal in wet towels.
- Offer a little cool water only if your pet is alert and able to drink. Do not force water.
- Go to the veterinary hospital immediately. The 2026 RECOVER first-aid guideline result also recommends transport after prehospital active cooling.
If you can monitor rectal temperature without delaying veterinary contact or transport, AAHA’s heatstroke response guidance says to stop active cooling when it reaches 103°F. Home cooling is not definitive treatment; a veterinarian must assess the animal and determine whether further support is needed.
Can hot pavement burn my pet’s paws?
Yes. Hot surfaces can injure paws, and sun exposure can burn skin. In its Aug. 23, 2024 article, AAHA reports that asphalt, concrete, sand, and metal can be 40–60°F hotter than the air. The article gives one sunny-day example: with air at 85°F, asphalt reached 135°F and could burn paws within a minute. These are AAHA’s reported figures and example, not a formula for every surface or condition. Avoid hot ground; contact a veterinarian about painful, blistered, or wounded paws.

Sunburn is also possible, especially on exposed skin. AAHA advises considering pet-safe sunscreen and balancing the sun protection of UV-blocking clothing against the risk of overheating. Ask your veterinarian what is suitable for your animal.

Veterinary teams can use routine appointments and clinic communications before warm weather to explain risk factors, warning signs, and when owners should seek care. On hot days, provide water to patients—particularly those waiting outdoors—and do not let patients wait alone in vehicles. Include guidance that is useful to owners of outdoor cats as well as dogs.
