A new cat in the first days or weeks does not need obedience training. It needs to feel safe, find its food, litter and resting places, and learn a predictable routine. Four steps cover most of what matters: set up a safe home base, introduce the home and any resident pets gradually, put litter, scratching surfaces and supplies where the cat can reach them, and build feeding and veterinary care around an assessment of that individual cat. The guidance below comes from the ASPCA and International Cat Care, and it applies to both adult cats and kittens unless a point is marked as kitten-specific.
1. Set up a safe home base
Before the cat arrives, choose one quiet room and furnish it for the first stage. The ASPCA’s guidance on moving with a pet describes a home-base room that the animal can use while it learns the rest of the house. Keep the cat in that room at first and let it explore other areas when it seems ready. Cats that are allowed to choose the pace tend to show their comfort through normal eating, using the litter box and moving around, which gives you a clearer signal than any schedule.
Prepare the room before arrival:
- Food and fresh water, placed away from the litter box.
- An accessible litter box, with a low entry if the cat is young or has mobility issues.
- At least one hiding place the cat can reach without climbing past people or pets.
International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten booklet recommends a quiet room with safe hiding places for the first week or two. That timeframe is written for kittens. Adult cats may need a shorter or longer period, so use the cat’s behavior rather than the calendar to decide when to widen access.
Because a newly settling cat may explore by hiding behind furniture, check the rest of the home for hazards before opening it up. Secure loose electrical cords, make sure windows and screens are secure, and remove accessible medicines and poisonous houseplants. The ASPCA’s guidance on new pets lists these as basic safety steps; a plant or medicine you cannot move should be checked with a veterinarian or a poison-control resource before the cat has access to that area.

2. Make introductions gradual
Hold off on opening the rest of the home until the cat has settled in its starting room. If other animals live in the house, keep them out of that room during the first stage, and introduce them in a controlled way rather than letting them meet face to face. The ASPCA’s Adoption Tips page puts it directly: “Don’t force interactions with people or other pets.”
Watch for signs that the pace is too fast. A cat that stays under furniture, stops eating, hisses or swats when approached, or avoids the litter box should be given more time in the current stage before it gets more space or contact. Moving forward again is a matter of seeing the cat relax, not of reaching a specific day.

The ASPCA’s 3-3-3 adjustment guideline
The ASPCA’s adoption guidance describes a “3-3-3 Guideline” for adjustment: the first three days, the next three weeks, and the first three months. It is best read as a rough framework for setting expectations after adoption. It is not a guaranteed behavioral timetable and not a clinical standard, and many cats will move through these periods at a different speed.
- First three days: the cat is most likely to hide and to need the quiet room.
- Next three weeks: the cat may begin exploring and interacting more, with ups and downs.
- First three months: many households see the cat’s typical personality and routines emerge.
3. Put essentials where the cat can use them
Litter box
Place the litter box in a quiet location that the cat can reach easily, and scoop solid waste at least once a day. In a multi-level home, the ASPCA recommends one box per floor. If a cat refuses to use the box, the ASPCA advises consulting a veterinarian, because medical problems can be involved. Separate ASPCA guidance on litter-box trouble also suggests reviewing box number and location and ruling out medical causes. Those troubleshooting steps are for cats that have a problem, not a required routine for every new arrival.

Scratching surfaces
Cats need to scratch, so give them an appropriate surface from the beginning. The ASPCA describes a stable post at least three feet high as one option, and a scratching pad can work for some cats. Avoid treating scratching as bad behavior to suppress. Instead, redirect the cat to the post or pad when it starts to scratch furniture, and make the approved surface stable enough that it does not tip while the cat uses it.

- Food and a food dish
- Water bowl
- Interactive toys
- Brush or comb
- Safety collar with an ID tag
- Scratching post or pad

Food and feeding
Food choice and quantity depend on the cat’s age, activity level and health. The ASPCA’s General Cat Care page states: “Your veterinarian will be able to assess your new cat or kitten and determine the best diet.” Ask a veterinarian to evaluate the cat and recommend a diet before you settle on a long-term feeding plan. Kittens have distinct nutritional needs, and the ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance on kittens should not be applied to adult cats.

Check-ups and vaccinations
The ASPCA recommends at least one veterinary examination a year and annual shots, and it advises a visit immediately if a cat is sick or injured. The same guidance notes that vaccination recommendations depend on age and health. Use these as general benchmarks, and get a schedule tailored to your cat and your region from your veterinarian, since vaccine recommendations vary by location and by the animal’s history.
Schedule the first veterinary visit soon after the cat arrives, and bring a list of the food the cat has been eating, any known health history, and questions about litter and scratching behavior. This gives the veterinarian what they need to assess the cat’s settling-in behavior alongside its health.
