Vito the Pug won Best in Show at the 2024 National Dog Show after winning the Toy Group. Best in Show judge George Milutinovich praised Vito’s compactness, features, and movement, while Purina described him as confident and showy. The judges’ response was rooted in how convincingly he represented the Pug, not simply in his appeal to viewers.
How Vito won Best in Show
Vito, registered as GCHG Andi In Cahoots, first won the Toy Group. He then advanced to the Best in Show final, where the seven group winners competed. Michael Scott handled him in the ring.
The National Dog Show is hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, according to NBC’s official event clip. Purina Pro Club reports that 1,940 dogs representing 205 of the 213 eligible breeds and varieties competed in the 2024 show.
Vito was the first Pug to win the National Dog Show’s top prize in its televised era, according to contemporaneous coverage. That qualifier matters: the claim is about the televised era, not every event that might be called a national dog show or the show’s pre-television history.

What the judges saw in Vito
Dog-show judging compares each dog with the ideal described by its own breed standard. Breed judging leads to group judging, and the group winners advance to the Best in Show final. Dogs of different breeds are not all judged against one physical template.
Purina’s winner announcement described Vito as an outgoing, 2½-year-old fawn male Pug who showed confidence and showmanship. Best in Show judge George Milutinovich said, “The Pug is as near perfect as I have seen.” Purina Pro Club reported his more specific assessment: “compact, features and movement — everything a pug should be.”

Formulated as the dog shedding shampoo for any breed, it maintains natural moisture balance, promotes skin recovery, and delivers lasting relief so your pup stays comfortable and active.
- PROVEN CLEANING POWER – Our pH-balanced lather harnesses salon-quality botanicals and gentle surfactants to lift dirt, debris, and odors without stripping natural oils. Doubles as a pet shampoo for full-body purification across all coat types, leaving fur healthy, vibrant, and protected against daily grime and seasonal buildup.
- IMMEDIATE COAT RELIEF – This shedding shampoo for dogs delivers fast-acting irritation control and detangling power in one simple step. Enriched with probiotics, oatmeal extracts, and soothing agents, it alleviates hot spots, reduces scratching, improves manageability, and supports your dog’s skin barrier health.
- REDUCED SHEDDING – With allergy shampoo for dogs featuring de-shedding and detangling complexes, our formula loosens undercoat hair, prevents matting, and enhances coat smoothness. Recommended for multi-breed use, it streamlines grooming sessions, diminishes excess shedding, and maintains a cleaner home.
Those comments offer the clearest evidence for why Vito stood out: the judge praised his build, features, and movement as a whole. Purina’s description of his confident, showy performance adds the ring presence that helped make those qualities visible.
Vito’s route through the competition
- Breed judging: Vito competed among Pugs and won.
- Toy Group: He advanced and won the Toy Group.
- Best in Show: As one of seven group winners, he competed for the top award and won.
This sequence explains how a Pug can win an all-breed show without being compared directly with every dog in the same way from the start. Judges assess dogs against their own breed standards before selecting group winners for the final.

Why the win mattered
Vito’s win was a notable result for Pugs because he became the first Pug to take the National Dog Show’s top prize during its televised era. It also showed how a compact companion breed can prevail in the final when judges find that its breed characteristics, movement, and presentation make a compelling overall impression.
The result is a conformation-show outcome, not a general measure of a breed’s health or suitability as a pet. It means Vito won under the judging process used at the 2024 event.
