Himalayan cats come in a set of named point colors (seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream, and blue-cream), and each can be combined with a pattern such as solid point, tortoiseshell point, bicolor point, tricolor point, or tabby/lynx point. The pale body and darker face, ears, paws, and tail come from a temperature-sensitive pigment gene. This guide does not mean a veterinarian has certified each color entry. Its color information comes from breed registries and veterinary genetics references, while TICA’s veterinary advice concerns health screening, which is covered separately below.
The named colors and patterns at a glance
The Himalayan is recognized by its Persian type and its pointed color pattern. TICA’s breed overview lists these possible point colors and patterns:
- Point colors: red, cream, seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, tortoiseshell, and blue-cream.
- Point patterns: solid point, tortoiseshell point, bicolor point, tricolor point, tabby/lynx point, smoke, and shaded point.
A color name and a pattern name describe different things. “Seal” tells you the shade of the points; “lynx” tells you how the points are marked. A cat can carry one of each, which is why the combinations in the table below exist. The smoke and shaded patterns are named in TICA’s overview, but this guide does not treat them in detail.
How colorpoint markings work
The pointed look is often called “colorpoint,” “Siamese,” or “Himalayan” pattern. CFA Judge Emeritus Pat Jacobberger describes it in CFA’s 2026 pointed-pattern article as created by the Siamese gene, which is thermally sensitive. Pigment is deposited where the body is coolest, so the extremities darken while the warmer torso stays pale.

UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory describes several genetic mechanisms that shape the final coat:
Colorpoint restriction
Warmer body areas produce less pigment, while cooler extremities such as the paws and ears become darker. This temperature sensitivity is the reason the face mask, ears, legs, and tail are the darkest areas of the cat.
Dilution
UC Davis describes dilute color as an autosomal recessive trait. It changes how pigment is distributed and lightens colors, which is why the blue and lilac point colors look softer than seal and chocolate.
Agouti banding
The agouti mechanism creates banding within individual hairs. Banding shows up as subtle shading across the coat rather than as a solid color, and it is one reason a point color can look uneven under different lighting.

Why the body darkens with age
Many owners notice that a Himalayan’s body becomes darker as the cat gets older. CFA’s explanation in the June 25, 2026 article “Patterns in the Domesticated Cat – Part 3: The Pointed Patterns” states:
“As a pointed patterned cat grows older, the body color darkens usually because there is an overall decrease of blood flow to the animal’s skin.”
The change is gradual, and it applies to the body color rather than the points. A kitten’s coat can look noticeably different from the same cat as an adult, so photos of a young cat and an older cat are not directly comparable.
Why this guide uses registry color names
TICA’s website uses official color names and compares them with common-language names. Official blue is often called gray, and official red may be called orange, rust, marmalade, yellow, or ginger. A cat described as “orange” on a shelter listing may be a red point in registry terms. TICA’s color guide also shows pointed cats with white spotting, where white can create additional patches on the body.

- Point pattern: solid, tortie, and lynx points can look similar at a glance; check for the mottling of tortie and the striping of lynx.
- White spotting: note whether there are white patches on the body, since these change the look of the same point color.
- Body-to-point contrast and age: a young cat and an older cat of the same color can look different, so record the cat’s age with each photo.
Photographs vary with lighting and camera settings. Use consistent light and say so in captions. The fourth point is editorial guidance for fair comparison; the sources cited here do not describe controlled photo conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A pointed coat does not prove a Himalayan
CFA notes that the pointed pattern appears in several pedigreed breeds and in the wider cat population. A pointed coat alone therefore does not establish that a cat is a pedigreed Himalayan. Label photos by their visible coat pattern unless the cat’s breed identity is documented, for example by registration papers.
How registries classify the Himalayan
Registries do not classify Himalayans identically. TICA describes the Himalayan as a breed. CFA’s history article, “Persian Himalayan,” records the Himalayan’s move into the Persian division. If a registry classification matters for your purposes, check that registry’s current breed rules directly.
Recognition milestones in CFA’s history
CFA’s 1999 history article gives these dates for when point colors and patterns were recognized in CFA. These are historical milestones, not current totals.

Health screening and coat care, kept separate from color
Color and coat pattern do not diagnose any health condition. TICA’s breed guidance advises owners of Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic Shorthairs to check with breeders and veterinarians about these conditions:
- Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)
- Respiratory problems
- Eye problems, including progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
The coat needs regular attention. TICA says the long, flowing coat has an undercoat that mats without grooming and requires constant care. Regular combing helps prevent mats, but no single tool prevents all mats, and a matted coat should be assessed by a veterinarian or groomer rather than pulled out at home.
