Homemade Cat Food for Senior Cats: How to Get a Safe Recipe

A homemade diet may suit a senior cat, but it needs to be formulated for that cat’s health and followed exactly. Here’s how to get a safe recipe.

A homemade diet can be appropriate for a senior cat, but a generic recipe from an article is not a safe substitute for one formulated for that cat. AAHA says most home-prepared recipes it has evaluated do not provide complete and balanced nutrition. Ask your veterinarian to help you obtain an individualized recipe and follow it exactly.

Why this article does not give six generic recipes

Ingredients that sound wholesome do not guarantee a nutritionally complete meal. Cats need specific nutrients in the right amounts and proportions; VCA identifies taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and niacin among nutrients that require particular attention. Ordinary meat-based combinations can also be short on minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, or iron.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine cautions that making cat food at home is difficult because a recipe may not contain the right quantities and proportions of nutrients. The sources cited here do not validate six general recipes, ingredient lists, or quantities for senior cats. Publishing them as complete diets could put a cat’s health at risk.

What makes a diet appropriate for an older cat?

Age is a prompt for assessment, not a formula

VCA notes that FelineVMA considers cats over 10 years old senior, while some cats may be considered senior at 8 or younger depending on breed or genetic conditions. There is no single set of nutrient requirements established for all senior cats: cats age differently, and their needs vary.

#1 Best Overall
Purina ONE Indoor Advantage Senior Dry Cat Food, High Protein, 7 lb Bag
  • Purina indoor cat food made with real chicken as the number 1 ingredient to support strong muscles, including a healthy heart
  • High fiber cat food made with high-quality nutrients and glucosamine helps support the health of cats age 7+
  • A natural fiber blend in Purina indoor dry cat food helps minimize hairballs
  • Adult cat food includes four antioxidant sources to help support a strong immune system in a crunchy kibble with calcium for strong teeth and healthy gums
  • Hairball control cat food features a great taste and deliciously crunchy bites with no artificial flavors or preservatives

Energy needs can also shift. VCA says they may initially decrease during the senior years and rise around age 11 in some cats. That does not predict what an individual cat needs. A veterinarian can assess weight, muscle condition, appetite, and health history before recommending a change. A senior visit may include a physical examination, diet history, blood tests, and urinalysis.

Health conditions can change the food plan

A recipe suitable for one older cat may not suit another with a medical condition. Cornell notes that diabetic cats may benefit from a moderately carbohydrate-restricted diet, while cats with advanced chronic kidney disease usually need diets restricted in protein and phosphorus. These are examples of condition-specific considerations, not recipes to apply without a veterinary plan.

Dental disease can make dry food harder to chew. Cornell says wet food, smaller pieces, or adding water may help. If an older cat is eating less, struggling to chew, or losing weight or muscle, discuss the change with a veterinarian rather than assuming a different homemade meal will solve it.

How to get a properly formulated homemade diet

  1. Start with your veterinarian. Discuss the cat’s diagnoses, medications, current food, appetite, body and muscle condition, chewing ability, and foods it will accept. Cornell’s veterinary hospital describes individualized home-diet formulation and consultations, with referrals through a primary veterinarian.
  2. Request a recipe for this cat. A veterinary nutrition specialist or other appropriately qualified professional should formulate the diet with the cat’s medical needs in mind. The plan should give exact ingredient amounts and preparation directions, including the required supplement.
  3. Measure and prepare it exactly as written. Use a gram scale when the directions call for it. Do not swap ingredients, omit a supplement, or change quantities without approval from the professional who formulated the diet. AAHA emphasizes following the recipe exactly; a scale improves measurement but does not make an unbalanced recipe complete.
  4. Ask how to store and review the diet. VCA gives a general shelf life of several days refrigerated or 2–3 months frozen for home-prepared diets. Follow the specific recipe’s handling instructions, and ask the formulator when the plan should be reassessed. AAHA recommends annual review with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist because recommendations and supplements can change.

Which feeding approach fits your cat?

The right choice depends on nutrition, medical needs, whether the cat will eat the food, and the preparation and follow-up it requires.

Option When it may fit What to confirm
Complete-and-balanced commercial food A practical option when the cat can eat and tolerate it. Check the AAFCO nutritional statement for a claim of complete and balanced nutrition for the stated life stage, as Cornell advises; ask your veterinarian whether it suits your cat’s health needs.
Veterinary therapeutic diet May be appropriate when a veterinarian recommends a diet for a diagnosed condition. Use it under the veterinary plan; do not substitute a generic online renal, diabetic, or other disease recipe.
Individually formulated home-prepared diet May fit when a cat’s needs, accepted foods, and the owner’s ability to prepare the recipe can be addressed in a tailored plan. Obtain exact instructions, including the specified supplement, and follow the professional’s review schedule.

Food safety and feeding details to discuss

  • Avoid raw meat. Cornell advises against raw meat as food or treats because it can carry toxoplasmosis and other infectious diseases.
  • Do not feed cooked bones. VCA warns that they can splinter and injure or obstruct the digestive tract.
  • Keep treats in perspective. Cornell says treats are not complete and balanced and should be occasional; its rule of thumb is no more than 10–15 percent of daily calories. Ask the veterinarian before offering treats to a cat on a therapeutic diet.
  • Monitor whether the cat is managing the food. Track appetite, hydration, body condition, muscle condition, and chewing ability, and report meaningful changes to the veterinarian.

Questions to ask before you start

  • Who will formulate the diet, and what qualifications do they have?
  • Does the recipe account for my cat’s diagnoses, medications, and current test results?
  • What exact supplement is required, and how should every ingredient be measured and prepared?
  • What should I do if an ingredient is unavailable or my cat refuses the food?
  • How should I monitor acceptance and body condition, and when should the recipe be reviewed?

Bottom line

Homemade food is not automatically healthier, safer, or nutritionally complete because it is made from familiar ingredients. A senior cat may do well on a home-prepared diet when it has been individually formulated, prepared exactly as directed, and reviewed with veterinary guidance. For an older cat, the safest recipe is the one built around that cat—not a generic list of six.
