Seven generic recipes cannot meet that standard, so this article does not offer them as a main diet. Instead, it explains why ordinary recipes fall short, what a safe homemade plan requires, and how to prepare one carefully if your veterinarian agrees.
Can I make homemade food for my cat?
In principle, yes. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee’s FAQ accepts that home-prepared diets can be appropriate for cats, provided they are complete and balanced for the individual animal. The operative word is individual. A recipe that suits one healthy adult cat may not suit a kitten, a senior cat, or a cat with a chronic illness.
“Home cooked diets, by definition, cannot be tested for adequacy (as opposed to commercial diets, which may undergo chemical nutrient analysis or feeding trials), thus, it is important that a veterinarian specialized in nutrition formulates the diet and that your pet is under careful veterinary supervision while a home-cooked diet is being fed.”

Are homemade cat food recipes safe?
Generic recipes are the weak point. Recipes from websites, magazines, and books are written for people and general cooking, not for a cat’s specific nutritional requirements. The WSAVA FAQ warns that such recipes can contain harmful ingredients or have nutritional deficiencies that become harmful over time. It uses garlic as its example of an ingredient that is harmful to cats.
Ingredients that do not belong in any cat recipe
- Garlic. WSAVA identifies garlic as a toxic plant for cats. Leave it out of every recipe, including seasonings and stock.
- Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. The AVMA policy on raw or undercooked animal-source protein in cat and dog diets discourages feeding these and describes adequate cooking or pasteurization as ways to reduce pathogens. Handling raw protein also exposes people in the kitchen to foodborne disease risk. The policy is at avma.org.
- Onion and leek. These belong to the same plant genus as garlic, and the genus is toxic to cats, so they stay out as well.
What makes a homemade diet complete and balanced?
A complete and balanced diet supplies every nutrient a cat needs, in amounts appropriate for its life stage and health. WSAVA’s Nutritional Assessment Guidelines (2011) frame formulation around energy needs, nutrient needs and safe upper limits, ingredient composition, and any medical condition. These factors fail independently. A recipe can supply the right number of calories and still be short on a nutrient, or it can supply a nutrient at a level that becomes excessive.

Species-specific requirements
Cats are obligate carnivores with requirements that differ from dogs and people. Taurine is a clear example: cats must obtain it from their diet, and cooking and ingredient choices change how much a recipe actually delivers, which is why formulators calculate it instead of assuming it is present. Liver is another common addition, but it is very rich in vitamin A. A recipe that relies on it can push vitamin A past safe limits, which is exactly the kind of upper-limit error that a calculated formula is designed to prevent.
Life stage and health status
A kitten, an adult cat, a senior cat, and a cat with a chronic illness have different needs. The WSAVA FAQ notes that a diet intended for a healthy cat may not fit a cat with chronic illness, so formulation should start with the individual cat’s age, body condition, and medical history.

Why recipe drift matters
A formulated recipe is valid only as written. Substituting one protein for another, leaving out a supplement, or changing amounts can turn a formulated diet into an inadequate one. The WSAVA material lists this drift among the main risks of homemade feeding. Calculations also depend on nutrient databases, which have their own limits, and WSAVA includes database limitations among those risks. A formula should therefore be treated as a fixed prescription, not as a starting point to adapt.
Comparing feeding approaches
The table compares three ways a cat can be fed, using the axes that matter for this decision. The WSAVA sources support these axes, but none of them contains a comparative trial showing that homemade diets generally outperform commercial ones, so the table describes how each approach is assessed rather than ranking outcomes.

What do I need to make homemade cat food?
Four things are needed before any homemade feeding begins:
- A complete, written formula from a veterinary nutrition specialist, listing every ingredient, supplement, and exact amount. A recipe found online does not qualify.
- A digital kitchen scale that measures in grams. Weighing ingredients makes preparation repeatable and helps you follow a formula accurately. It does not make an unbalanced recipe complete.
- Time and budget. WSAVA’s 2018 Singapore abstracts, including “Homemade Diets: When and How to Use Them,” discuss ingredient sourcing, supplies, and the cost and time demands of homemade feeding. The abstracts are available at WSAVA Singapore 2018 Abstracts.
- Veterinary access for scheduled examinations and blood work.
Questions to ask a veterinary nutritionist

- Was this formula designed for my cat’s current age, weight, body condition, and health history?
- Which nutrient database was used, and how were the amounts calculated?
- Which supplements are required, and in what amounts?
- Which substitutions, if any, are acceptable, and what should I do when an ingredient is unavailable?
- How often should my cat be re-examined and tested, and what would prompt an earlier check?
Preparing a formulated diet
Once a veterinary nutrition specialist has provided a formula and your veterinarian has agreed to the plan, preparation follows these steps:
- Weigh each ingredient in grams, exactly as the formula lists it.
- Cook all animal-source proteins fully, following the cooking guidance above.
- Make no substitutions or additions. If an ingredient is unavailable, ask the nutritionist before using anything else.
- Keep a log of each batch, along with any changes in appetite, stool, energy, or weight, and share it at each visit.
How often should a homemade diet be checked?
The WSAVA FAQ gives twice-yearly examinations and blood work as an example of monitoring for a home-cooked diet. It adds that more frequent checks may be needed for chronic conditions. Treat this as the document’s general example rather than a schedule for your cat, because the interval should be set by your veterinarian. Between visits, report weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or a drop in energy promptly.
Occasional treats
If your veterinarian is comfortable with it, a small amount of home-cooked food can serve as a treat rather than a meal. Keep it plain: fully cooked, unseasoned, and free of the ingredients listed above. Label it clearly as a treat in your household routine, and keep it to a small share of daily calories. Your veterinarian can set the exact limit for your cat.
