- 1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter, confirmed to be xylitol-free
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 cup skim milk
Directions
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet or cake pan. A paw-shaped silicone baking pan is an optional presentation choice; a standard greased pan also works with the recipe.
- Stir together the flour and baking powder in one bowl.
- In a second bowl, mix the peanut butter and milk. Stir in the dry ingredients until combined.
- For a cake, spoon the mixture into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly brown.
- Let the cake cool completely before adding yogurt icing or dog-safe frosting.

Check ingredients before baking or decorating
Read the peanut butter label for xylitol
Do not use peanut butter containing xylitol. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains that xylitol can occur in peanut butter and baked goods and can cause an exaggerated insulin release, dangerously low blood sugar, and liver injury in dogs. Check the ingredient list, and do not share food containing xylitol. Cornell’s xylitol guidance says clinical signs may begin within 30–60 minutes; that is not a reliable prediction of when signs will appear in any particular dog. If exposure is suspected, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service urgently rather than waiting for symptoms.

Keep common hazards out of the cake and toppings
Do not add chocolate, coffee or other caffeine, grapes, or raisins. Cornell identifies these as hazards for dogs. Chocolate risk varies with the dog’s size, the amount eaten, and the type; darker, more bitter chocolate generally presents greater risk. Choose a portion with your dog’s needs in mind
The published recipe does not specify how many servings it makes or how much an individual dog should eat. A birthday cake is a treat, not a nutritionally complete diet. If your dog has a health condition, dietary restrictions, or a prescribed diet, ask your veterinarian whether these ingredients and a celebratory treat are appropriate.
