How a Warmer World Affects Dogs: Heat, Smoke, Storms and Parasites

Warmer, more volatile weather affects dogs most directly through heat, wildfire smoke and disasters. Here is what veterinary authorities advise, what is plausible, and what has not been measured for dogs.

A warmer, more volatile climate affects dogs mainly through three routes: heat exposure, wildfire smoke that drifts into communities, and disasters that disrupt water, shelter and evacuation. Ecological change may also shift where ticks, fleas and heartworm-carrying mosquitoes are active, but as of October 2026 no dog-specific trend in those parasites has been established. The sections below separate what veterinary authorities already advise from what is plausible and what has not been measured for dogs.

Three kinds of evidence, kept apart

Climate and dog health is a cross-disciplinary subject, and the evidence behind it varies in strength. The table below shows which claims in this article rest on concrete veterinary guidance, which rest on documented mechanisms that have not been measured in dogs, and which have no dog-specific figure at all.

Evidence level What it covers Where it appears How to read it
1. Established veterinary safety advice Precautions and warning signs for dogs in heat, smoke and emergencies American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), “Warm weather pet safety”; U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “Take Care of Your Pets Before Disaster Strikes”; “Protect Your Pets from Wildfire Smoke,” a 2019 factsheet from EPA, CDC, the U.S. Forest Service and AVMA Follow as current guidance from named authorities
2. Plausible or broadly documented pathways Mechanisms linking warming, extreme weather and ecological change to animal health World Veterinary Association policy statement WVA/PS/2026/04, “Global Climate Change Emergency” (April 2026), which covers animals broadly; CDC’s “Effects of Climate Change on Health” (reviewed February 29, 2024), which concerns human health Credible pathways, not measured outcomes in dogs
3. Canine-specific effects not quantified Climate-linked changes in dog illness, deaths, or regional parasite rates No dog-specific figure appears in these sources Do not extrapolate from human or livestock data

Heat is the most direct risk to dogs

AVMA’s warm-weather guidance is explicit that heat can create risk on days that do not feel especially hot to people. Dogs shed heat largely by panting and through their paws, so exertion in warm conditions matters more than the thermometer alone. This is practical safety guidance from AVMA, not a finding that warming has increased heat illness in dogs by a measured amount.

Which dogs face higher risk

AVMA identifies overweight dogs and short-nosed breeds as having higher risk during warm-weather exercise. Those dogs warrant extra caution on warm days, including reduced exercise intensity, even when the household is comfortable.

Practical steps on warm days

  1. Walk during cooler hours and avoid the hottest part of the day.
  2. Avoid hot pavement. As an informal rule of thumb, if the surface is too hot to rest your bare hand on, it is likely too hot for paws; choose grass or shaded routes instead.
  3. Take frequent breaks in shade.
  4. Carry enough fresh water for both you and your dog.
  5. Make sure your dog has shade and fresh water at home as well.

Warning signs that need emergency care

AVMA lists the following as signs of heat stress and advises emergency veterinary care if they occur:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Anxiousness or restlessness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Abnormal gum or tongue color
  • Collapse

Contact an emergency veterinarian rather than watching a dog at home to see whether symptoms settle. A symptom list helps you recognize an emergency; it should never be used to decide whether to delay care.

Wildfire smoke and poor air quality

Wildfire smoke can irritate a dog’s eyes and respiratory tract. The federal factsheet “Protect Your Pets from Wildfire Smoke,” issued in 2019 by EPA, CDC, the U.S. Forest Service and AVMA, is the core federal reference on this point. Check local agencies for any newer guidance, since the factsheet is several years old.

Which dogs are most at risk

  • Older dogs
  • Dogs with heart disease
  • Dogs with lung disease

What to do during smoke events

  1. Follow current local air-quality alerts for your area.
  2. Watch for eye irritation, coughing, or changes in breathing, and call your veterinarian if they appear.
  3. If your dog has heart or lung disease, ask your veterinarian for specific advice before smoke season rather than during an event.

The federal factsheet does not define a safe smoke exposure level for dogs. No human air-quality number should be presented as a dog-safe threshold.

Extreme weather, evacuation and shelters

FDA’s preparedness guidance covers hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other emergencies. It advises taking pets during an evacuation when possible, and it notes that temporary public shelters may not allow animals. Because a dog that is unfamiliar with a crate or carrier may be harder to move when time is short, preparation starts well before an emergency.

Preparing before an emergency

  1. Identify pet-friendly places you could go before you need them.
  2. Acclimate your dog to a crate or carrier now, using short practice sessions at home.
  3. Plan to take your dog with you if you evacuate, when it is safe to do so.
  4. Do not assume a public shelter will accept animals. Ask local emergency management about pet policies before a disaster.

Parasites, vectors and ecological change

WVA’s 2026 policy statement describes direct climate impacts on animals, including rising ambient temperatures and extreme weather. It also describes indirect pathways, including shifts in vector-borne and parasitic disease dynamics. The statement addresses animal health broadly, not dogs specifically.

What is established: prevention advice

AVMA recommends discussing prevention for fleas, ticks and heartworm with a veterinarian. That advice does not depend on climate trends, because the right plan depends on local risk and on your dog’s lifestyle.

What is plausible but not measured in dogs

CDC’s climate and health overview identifies vectors among the general pathways through which climate affects health. It concerns human health, however, and does not give canine data. Together, these sources support the idea that warming could change which parasites and disease carriers are present where dogs live. They do not establish how canine tick, flea or heartworm rates have changed by region, or whether any particular area will see a predictable shift. A dog’s individual risk cannot be tied to climate change in any quantified way on current evidence.
