Bebe Neuwirth has said that cats were her first love. In a 2016 interview with Catster, she recounted how three cats came into her home and explained why she values adoption events. Her animal-welfare work also included volunteering with shelter dogs, as the ASPCA reported in 2017.

How Neuwirth described her love of animals

Asked when her affection for animals began, Neuwirth told Catster that she had always loved them and that cats were her first love. She said she related more to cats than dogs, admiring their movement, balance and agility, as well as the inner life she felt they seemed to possess.

Her interview also touched on animals connected to her acting roles. Neuwirth recalled that Lilith Crane was attached to a lab rat named Whiskers. Speaking about Nadine Tolliver, she said she liked to imagine the character might have a couple of rescue animals. That was Neuwirth’s speculation about a fictional character, not a statement about the show’s storyline.

The cats she spoke about in the 2016 interview

Neuwirth’s account described how Bobby, Tallulah and Billie joined her household at the time. These are historical details from that interview, not confirmation of which pets she has today.

Bobby

Neuwirth said Bobby was a black cat found with his two brothers in a cardboard box when they were about two weeks old. A friend bottle-raised the kittens, and she said a friend adopted the brothers.

Tallulah

She described Tallulah as a long-haired calico adopted with her husband, Chris, from PAWS in Philadelphia.

Billie

Neuwirth said Billie, a Siamese mix, was found at SAVE in Princeton, New Jersey.

Why she valued Broadway Barks

Neuwirth told Catster that she supported Broadway Barks because the event brought people together around animals and helped them find homes. A 2017 report by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS also documented her participation and described her as a longtime supporter. The organization reported that she told the crowd: “There is nothing more rewarding than rescuing an animal, because, as we all know, they rescue you, too.”

That emphasis on adoption—not simply affection for pets—was central to how Neuwirth spoke about rescue. She valued the community effort that connects animals with homes.

Her work with shelter dogs and equine rescue

Reading to shelter dogs

In May 2017, Neuwirth volunteered as a reader for dogs through the ASPCA’s Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment (CARE), according to the ASPCA. The program gave fearful, under-socialized dogs time to relax around people. Neuwirth described the experience this way: “It’s a lovely, beautiful experience for me to read to the dogs. It’s clichéd, but when we heal them, they heal us.”

Equine Advocates

In the Catster interview, Neuwirth also described an association with Equine Advocates, which she characterized as a sanctuary for rescued equines in Chatham, New York. That description reflects her account in the interview rather than a current profile of the organization.

What the accounts establish—and what they do not

The available accounts document Neuwirth’s personal recollections about cats, her support for Broadway Barks, and her 2017 volunteer reading for shelter dogs. They do not confirm the current status of the cats mentioned in the interview or establish a current product endorsement. The ASPCA and event reports describe particular activities in 2017; they should not be read as a complete or up-to-date account of her animal-welfare work.
