Berry was one of 70 small dogs found in an overcrowded home in eastern Arkansas. After arriving at a shelter pregnant and in poor condition, she gave birth to four puppies, went into foster care, and eventually found a home with Katie and Adam Crouch. Her story is a record of one dog’s difficult start and the time her new family gave her to feel safe.
Berry’s shelter arrival
When Berry arrived at West Memphis Animal Shelter, she was five years old, very pregnant, and in poor condition. Best Friends Animal Society’s feature describes patchy fur and a torn ear. Berry gave birth to four puppies the day she arrived. The article also reports that most of the dogs from the home, including Berry, had heartworms.

The shelter was caring for dogs removed from an overcrowded eastern Arkansas home. Best Friends described 70 small dogs there, many sick, under-socialized, or scared. Those numbers describe this case, not shelter populations more broadly.
From shelter care to a foster home
Regional organizations rallied to help West Memphis Animal Shelter. Best Friends says its team took 19 dogs to its pet resource center in Bentonville, Arkansas; Berry and her puppies were among them and went to foster care.

After Berry’s puppies were adopted and she had finished nursing, she began heartworm treatment. Best Friends’ account does not provide further clinical details, so it does not establish the treatment course or Berry’s health status after the feature was published.
How Katie and Adam chose Berry
Katie and Adam Crouch had recently lost their senior dog, Ellie Mae, to cancer. Adam was immediately drawn to Berry, while Katie was unsure at first because she had never had a small dog. They arranged a doggy day out intended to last a few hours. After spending that time with Berry, they decided to adopt her.

“Once we brought her home, it was just game over once we saw her personality, how sweet she was,” Katie said.
Building trust at Berry’s pace
At first, Katie described Berry as shy, timid, and reserved. Her new home included Benny, a German shepherd mix, and Meow Meow, a tabby cat. Berry grew more comfortable with the family through patient attention and treats, rather than being pushed into interactions before she was ready.
Berry enjoys sitting on laps and being petted behind the ears, but she does not like being picked up. The Crouches respect that boundary. Katie said, “I just feel so honored to be able to be there for her and take care of her.”
Best Friends shelter partnerships coordinator Natalie Shelton described what a home could mean for a dog like Berry: “She never got to be in a home where she had her own toys and everything,” Shelton said.

Berry’s life with the Crouches
Berry often follows Katie while she works from home and sometimes joins her on errands. The family uses a special booster seat so Berry can look out of the car window. They also take her to the cafe at Best Friends’ Pet Resource Center, where she gets a pup cup.
