A good starting point is a rectangular litter box with usable interior length about 1.5 times your cat’s length, measured from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail—not the tail tip. The AAFP/ISFM guideline also reports that adult cats in one study preferred a 34 × 15 inch (86 × 39 cm) box over a smaller one. That is a useful reference, not a universal minimum for every cat.
How to size a litter box for your cat
- Measure your cat: Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail.
- Use the 1.5-times rule: Look for a box whose usable interior length is about one and a half times that measurement. The AAFP/ISFM guideline recommends this proportion; it is a rule of thumb, not an individually validated prescription for every cat or box shape. AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline
- Check the inside, not just the outside: Product measurements may include thick walls or a rim, so compare the interior floor dimensions with your cat’s measurement.
- Make sure your cat can move comfortably: There should be room to turn around, dig, and cover waste without constantly bumping into the sides. Veterinary Partner’s guide to choosing a litter box
What does the 34 × 15 inch reference mean?
The AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline reports that adult cats in one study preferred a 34 × 15 inch (86 × 39 cm) box over a smaller one. It is evidence of a preference in that study—not proof that every cat needs exactly those dimensions, or a clinical minimum. Use it as a practical point of comparison, alongside the 1.5-times rule and your cat’s ability to turn and dig. AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline

What if standard litter boxes are too small?
The AAFP/ISFM guideline names concrete mixing trays, sweater boxes, and under-bed storage containers as possible alternatives when a large enough commercial box is unavailable. Compare the usable interior floor area and entry height just as you would for a purpose-made box. A larger container is only a workable choice if your cat can enter and leave it safely and it fits the space where the box will be placed. AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline

Choose an entry your cat can manage
Floor dimensions are only part of the fit. Kittens, older cats, unwell cats, and cats with mobility limitations may have trouble stepping over a high wall. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP cat-friendly veterinary environment guideline recommends low-sided boxes or high clear walls with a low entry door to make access and exit easier for unwell cats. 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines

When litter-box problems call for a veterinarian
If your cat starts eliminating outside the box or struggles to enter or use it, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming that a larger box will solve the problem. House-soiling can have medical causes, including serious conditions such as urinary blockage; a size change cannot diagnose or rule out illness. AAHA: General Litter Box Considerations
