How can you help if you cannot foster?
Fostering is only one way to support kitten care. Shelters and rescues may need practical help that keeps kittens with a capable caregiver or helps prevent avoidable shelter intake.

- Connect a finder with a foster. Contact a local shelter or rescue and help the person who found kittens reach its foster team.
- Donate or organize a kitten-care kit. Best Friends says kits typically include feeding supplies and a heating pad. Check with the intended shelter first; it may already supply formula, bottles, or other items, and needs differ.
- Share accurate local guidance. Direct neighbors to local shelter and rescue advice, especially the recommendation to observe healthy kittens from a distance before intervening.
- Support community-cat work. Ask local organizations whether they need volunteers or other help with TNVR or ongoing care for outdoor cats.
These options differ in time and care intensity. Bottle-feeding neonatal kittens requires frequent attention; supply drives and sharing reliable information can help without bringing a litter home. The sources do not provide a comparable cost or impact measure for ranking these choices.
What is TNVR, and when is it used?
TNVR means trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and returning community cats to their outdoor homes. It is intended for outdoor community-cat populations, not as a default response to a found litter or a way to place every outdoor cat indoors. What can community support accomplish?
One Best Friends account describes a Dallas help-desk effort in a setting where Dallas Animal Services was receiving around 700 cats and kittens a month. In that program account, more than 350 cats and kittens were kept out of the shelter in two months, and more than 40 kittens were placed with new foster volunteers in the same period. The page does not state the year. These are figures from one local program, not national estimates or a basis for predicting what another effort will achieve.
Best Friends attributes this observation about that work to Sarah Sheek, then-director of SPCA of Texas: “I realized the biggest impact we could make was keeping cats from entering the shelter in the first place.”

Where should you start locally?
- Call a nearby shelter or rescue. Explain whether you found a litter, are considering fostering, or want to help outdoor cats. Ask about its current process and available support.
- Match the help to the need. For a found litter, ask about foster placement and neonatal guidance. For outdoor community cats, ask whether a TNVR program is operating locally.
- Confirm supply needs before buying. Ask whether the organization provides formula, bottles, a heating pad, or other items, and what it can accept.
- Choose a commitment you can sustain. If you cannot provide frequent hands-on care, offer a referral, supply drive, information-sharing, or other help the organization requests.
