How Do Crayfish Breathe? Gills, Water Flow, and Life Out of Water

Crayfish use internal gills to take oxygen from water and release carbon dioxide. Some tolerate time out of water when conditions keep their gills moist.

Crayfish breathe with internal gills—not lungs. Water passes through protected chambers beneath the carapace, where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it. Some crayfish can stay out of water for a limited time if their gills remain moist, but how long depends on the species and conditions.

How crayfish gills work

Crayfish have plume-like gills inside chambers along the sides of the body, beneath the carapace—the hard shield covering the front part of the body. The carapace protects the gills and helps form a channel for water to pass over them, as described by the Australian Museum.

Flaps attached to the mouthparts help circulate oxygenated water through the chambers and across the gills, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. As water contacts the gill surfaces, oxygen moves into the blood and carbon dioxide moves out. The University of Canterbury’s thesis on the New Zealand freshwater crayfish Paranephrops zealandicus describes gill filaments and blood channels in that species; those anatomical details are specific to its subject, not necessarily every crayfish.

Can crayfish breathe out of water?

Some crayfish, especially burrowing species, can remain out of water for a time in humid conditions, provided their gills stay moist. The University of Kentucky’s Crayfish of Kentucky resource gives “up to 72 hours” under those conditions. Treat that as a conditional figure from that source, not a safe or universal limit for all species: humidity, species, and whether the gills remain moist all matter. Being able to tolerate air for a while does not mean a crayfish has lungs.

Does water oxygen affect crayfish breathing?

Ventilation can respond to oxygen availability. A 1977 study of Astacus leptodactylus found that ventilation decreased as water oxygenation increased (Dejours and Beekenkamp, “Crayfish respiration as a function of water oxygenation”). This finding concerns that studied species and conditions; it should not be treated as a numerical rule for every crayfish.
