A cat’s receptive heat period (estrus) averages seven days, but VCA Animal Hospitals reports a range of one to 21 days. If she is not mated, she may leave heat for a short interval and cycle again; the full cycle averages about three weeks, but timing varies.
Heat-like behavior alone does not establish a medical problem. Contact a veterinarian about bleeding, unusual discharge, signs of illness, or if you are unsure what you are seeing.
What “in heat” means
“In heat” is the everyday expression for estrus, the receptive stage of a female cat’s reproductive cycle. An intact female cat is also called a queen. During estrus, hormonal changes make her receptive to mating and produce the familiar behaviors owners notice.
Cats are seasonally polyestrous. In other words, they can have multiple heat cycles during a breeding season rather than just one annual cycle. Daylight, geography, and environmental conditions affect cycling. Cats may cycle year-round in some conditions, including indoor environments.

How often does a cat come back into heat?
When a female cat is not mated, she may leave heat for a short interval before cycling again. VCA Animal Hospitals reports that the interval out of heat averages about seven days, with a range of two to 19 days. The full cycle, including estrus and the interval before the next heat, ranges from one to six weeks and averages about three weeks, according to VCA.
This is why a cat may seem to “stay in heat” for weeks: she may be cycling out of estrus briefly and then starting again. Individual cats do not all follow the same calendar.
Signs that a cat is in heat
Heat is usually recognized through behavior rather than obvious physical changes. Common signs include:
- loud, repeated, or unusually persistent vocalization
- increased affection and attention-seeking
- rubbing against people, furniture, or other objects
- rolling on the floor
- restlessness or attempts to get outside
- crouching or raising the hindquarters when touched along the back
- treading or kneading with the back legs
- moving the tail to one side
- urinating more often or marking to attract a mate
The characteristic posture is sometimes called lordosis: the front of the body is lowered, the hindquarters are raised, the back legs may tread, and the tail is held to one side.

Do cats bleed when they are in heat?
Vaginal bleeding is not commonly observed during feline estrus. Do not assume that bleeding or unusual discharge is a normal heat sign.
Contact a veterinarian if your cat has bleeding or unusual discharge, seems sick, has urinary or breathing problems, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, appetite loss, or if you are unsure what you are seeing. Loud vocalization and other behavior alone cannot rule out a medical problem.
Can a cat get pregnant during heat?
Yes. A female cat can become pregnant at any time while she is in heat. Cats Protection notes that cats may reach sexual maturity as early as four months. If you do not want kittens:
- Keep the female strictly indoors.
- Keep her physically separated from every intact male, including males in the same household.
- Check doors, windows, screens, and cat flaps carefully because a cat in heat may make determined escape attempts.
- Arrange a spay consultation rather than relying on waiting for the behavior to stop permanently.
Separation is necessary even if she has only recently started showing signs. A brief escape or an unsupervised interaction can be enough for mating to occur.

When should I call a veterinarian?
There is no specific number of days that the research sources identify as an emergency threshold for heat behavior. Contact a veterinarian if your cat has bleeding or unusual discharge, seems sick, has urinary or breathing problems, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, appetite loss, or if you are unsure whether the behavior is heat or illness.
Heat behavior can vary, and behavior alone does not diagnose a reproductive condition. Ask a veterinarian to assess persistent or concerning signs rather than trying to identify a cause at home.
How to prevent future heat cycles
Spaying is the recommended long-term measure to prevent unwanted pregnancy and heat-associated behaviors when a cat is not part of a breeding program. Discuss the appropriate timing and care for your individual cat with a veterinarian.
There is no general requirement that a cat have one heat cycle—or one litter—before being spayed. If you do not intend to breed her, schedule a spay consultation with your veterinarian.

What about medication or calming products?
Do not give a cat human contraceptives or reproductive hormones unless a veterinarian has specifically prescribed them. The research sources support discussing spaying with a veterinarian as the long-term measure to prevent pregnancy and heat-associated behaviors; they do not establish retail products as necessary or effective treatments for ordinary estrus.
Keeping her indoors and away from intact males helps prevent pregnancy, but does not stop the current cycle.
A simple timeline to use at home
| What you observe | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Calling, rubbing, rolling, raised hindquarters | Typical behavioral signs of estrus | Keep her indoors and away from intact males; note when the signs began. |
| Behavior stops after several days | The heat may have ended temporarily | Continue preventing mating because another heat may return. |
| Signs return after an interval | A new cycle may have begun | Continue separation and arrange spaying if kittens are not intended. |
| Bleeding, unusual discharge, or signs of illness | These should not be assumed to be normal heat | Contact a veterinarian. |
