Adult fish flies generally live for a few days, and some survive for up to about seven days. That short winged phase is only the final part of their life cycle, however. Fish flies spend most of their lives underwater as larvae, and some species may take several years to mature before emerging as adults.
What is a fish fly?
Fish flies are aquatic insects in the order Megaloptera, the same broader insect order that includes dobsonflies. They are not ordinary household flies, and they should not be confused with mayflies.

In the eastern United States, commonly discussed fish flies include species in the genera Chauliodes, Neohermes, and Nigronia. The spring fish fly is often identified as Chauliodes rastricornis, while the summer fish fly is Chauliodes pectinicornis. Fish-fly larvae develop in water, while adults usually remain near streams, rivers, ponds, or other aquatic habitats.

How long does the adult fish fly live?
The visible, winged adult stage usually lasts a few days. Some fish flies may live for up to approximately seven days, but seven days is an upper estimate rather than a guaranteed lifespan for every individual.
Actual adult longevity can vary with species, temperature, moisture, predators, mating opportunities, and other environmental conditions. The safest general answer is therefore “a few days to about a week,” rather than an exact seven-day lifespan.
Adult megalopterans generally stay close to water and rarely feed. Their main function at this stage is reproduction: adults mate, females lay eggs, and the next generation returns to the aquatic environment as larvae.
How long is the complete fish-fly life cycle?
The complete life cycle is much longer than the adult stage. Fish flies undergo complete metamorphosis:

- SELF PRIMING: Submerged motor starts up with no priming required.

- Egg: The female lays eggs, generally on or near vegetation, rocks, or other surfaces associated with water.
- Larva: The young insect enters the aquatic stage and feeds on aquatic organisms while growing.
- Pupa: After the larval growth period, it leaves the water or reaches a suitable nearby site to pupate.
- Adult: The winged fish fly emerges, mates, and completes the cycle.
The larval period is the longest part of the process. Large megalopteran species may require several years of larval growth before reaching maturity. Because development differs among species and conditions, there is no single egg-to-adult duration that applies to every fish fly. It is accurate to say that the overall life cycle may extend for years in some species.
Why do fish flies live so briefly as adults?
Fish flies invest most of their energy in growing as aquatic larvae. The adult stage comes after that extended feeding and development period and is primarily a reproductive phase.
Most adult megalopterans rarely feed, so they are not built for a long adult existence in the way many continuously feeding insects are. Once mating and egg-laying are complete, the adult stage ends. This explains how an insect can spend years developing underwater but appear above water for only a few days.

“Rarely feed” is more accurate than saying that adult fish flies can never feed. Feeding behavior may vary across species and individuals, so an absolute claim would be too broad.

Why do fish flies suddenly appear in summer?
A sudden appearance usually marks the end of a long aquatic developmental period. Larvae can remain out of sight underwater for months or years, then emerge during a relatively short seasonal window when adults are ready to reproduce.
Warm weather, proximity to slow-moving water, and artificial lights can make the adults especially conspicuous. Seeing many fish flies around a home or light does not mean they have been living indoors; it usually means a nearby aquatic population has reached its adult stage.
Fish flies versus mayflies
The names are easy to confuse, but fish flies and mayflies are different insects.
| Feature | Fish flies | Mayflies |
|---|---|---|
| Insect group | Megaloptera | Ephemeroptera |
| Immature habitat | Aquatic larvae | Aquatic nymphs |
| Typical adult lifespan | A few days; some may live up to about seven days | Often about 24 hours or less for the adult stage |
| Relationship | Close relatives of dobsonflies | A separate insect order |
Both groups have aquatic immature stages and short-lived adults, but “fish fly” is not another name for “mayfly.”

Are fish flies a problem for pets or people?
Fish flies are generally associated with natural freshwater habitats and are not considered household pests. An adult found near a porch light may be startling because of its size and appearance, but its presence does not by itself indicate an indoor infestation or a danger to a dog or cat.
Household fly sprays, indoor traps, and other nuisance-fly controls are usually the wrong response to a fish fly outdoors. If one enters the home, gently guide it outside or remove it without handling it unnecessarily. Avoid disturbing aquatic larvae or treating natural water with pesticides.

Identification is most reliable when you consider the insect’s location, season, appearance, and behavior together. Look for an adult near freshwater, especially on a warm evening or around outdoor lights. The larval stage is aquatic and may be found in streams or other suitable water bodies.

Because species and ranges vary, a regional reference is more useful than assuming that every large, winged insect near water is the same species. Readers who want to compare fish flies with dobsonflies, alderflies, mayflies, and other freshwater insects may find an aquatic insect identification book useful. Choose a guide that covers the region where the insect was observed; no single general book should be assumed to identify every fish-fly species worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do fish flies live for only one day?
No. Fish flies usually live as winged adults for a few days, and some may survive for up to about seven days. The one-day figure is more commonly associated with the adult stage of some mayflies, not fish flies.
Do fish flies live in water?
Fish-fly larvae live and develop in water. Adults are winged and are generally found near water, where they reproduce and lay eggs.
Are fish flies harmful to dogs and cats?
Fish flies are not generally considered household pests or a typical danger to pets. An occasional adult near a light is usually a nuisance or curiosity rather than evidence of an infestation.

Bottom line: A fish fly’s adult life is brief—usually a few days and sometimes up to about a week—but its aquatic larval development lasts far longer. In some species, the insect may spend several years growing underwater before emerging for its short reproductive adult stage.
