For a newly adopted shelter dog or cat with an incomplete exposure history, keep the newcomer separated from resident pets for 14 full days as a practical default. Some dog advisories call 10 days the minimum, but two weeks gives more time for illnesses with incubation periods around 10–14 days to become apparent. This is a precautionary household quarantine, not a substitute for veterinary care. If the pet has vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, eye or nasal discharge, lethargy, fever, breathing trouble, or skin lesions, stop treating the situation as a routine countdown: use veterinary-directed isolation until signs resolve and a veterinarian considers transmission risk low.
How long should a shelter pet stay separated from other pets?
Plan on 14 complete days for a healthy-appearing shelter pet whose vaccination, exposure, and illness history is uncertain. Count only days during which the animal remains separated and symptom-free; a new exposure can restart the period. The endpoint also depends on the animal’s examination, clinical signs, and any disease-specific advice from the shelter or veterinarian.

This approach is deliberately cautious because a pet can incubate infection before showing signs. Puppies, kittens, elderly animals, immunocompromised pets, and unvaccinated residents warrant especially conservative management. A separate room with a closed door is the most reliable arrangement. A secure, species-appropriate temporary enclosure can help when a room is unavailable, but it does not replace handwashing, dedicated supplies, and veterinary guidance.
Why is two weeks a useful quarantine window?
The useful window is based on the longest plausible incubation period for diseases the newcomer could have encountered, not on the shelter label alone. University of Florida shelter-medicine teaching material (2021) lists these examples:

| Infection or disease group | Incubation period cited | Why it matters at home |
|---|---|---|
| Canine distemper virus | About 2 weeks | A dog may appear well initially, so a short separation can end before signs emerge. |
| Canine parvovirus | Up to 10 days | Feces from an incubating dog can expose puppies and unvaccinated dogs. |
| Feline panleukopenia virus | Up to 10 days | Recently adopted cats can require protection for vulnerable resident cats during this period. |
| Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus | Up to 1 week | Respiratory or oral signs may develop within the first week, but other risks can last longer. |
| Several canine respiratory pathogens | Under 1 week | Coughing or nasal discharge may appear quickly, especially after transport stress. |
| Ringworm | Up to 2 weeks | Skin lesions or hair loss may not be obvious immediately and can spread by contact or contaminated items. |
Quarantine is not a guarantee that an animal cannot shed an organism after the calendar period. It is a risk-reduction interval that must be extended when symptoms, exposure, or a veterinarian’s assessment indicates continuing risk.
Is 10 days enough, or should you wait 14 days?
Ten days can be a stated minimum in some dog-specific advisories, while 14 days is the more protective default for an adopter facing incomplete information. Use the longer interval when any resident is particularly vulnerable or when records are missing.

| ASPCApro recommendation for newly arrived foster animals | Generally 14 days of separation; publication year not stated on the page | A useful baseline for a new household pet with unknown exposure. |
| Cumberland County Animal Services adoption advice (2024) | At least 10 days, ideally two full weeks | The county specifically highlights separation from puppies and unvaccinated dogs during a canine-parvovirus concern. |
| American Animal Hospital Association high-risk dog protocol (2022) | Segregated housing through the anticipated incubation period, with retesting 10–14 days later in the cited protocol | Follow the protocol set by the veterinarian or shelter when exposure is known or suspected. |
| Animal Welfare Victoria code (June 2022) | Eight-day shelter quarantine before rehoming under the cited state code | This is a local facility requirement, not a universal household rule. |
These figures are not interchangeable. A shelter’s legal or operational release rule may be shorter than the cautious plan appropriate for a home with an unvaccinated puppy. When the two options are 10 days and 14 days and no veterinarian has supplied a disease-specific endpoint, waiting the additional four days provides a wider safety margin.
What is the difference between quarantine and isolation?
Quarantine separates an animal that may have been exposed but has no signs. Isolation separates an animal that has a diagnosed infection or is showing signs of infectious disease. ASPCApro makes this distinction because the response changes as soon as illness appears.

If the new pet develops vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, eye or nasal discharge, unusual tiredness, fever, breathing changes, or skin lesions, move from routine quarantine to veterinary-directed isolation. Contact a veterinarian before allowing contact with resident animals, and ask whether the shelter needs to be notified. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians advises isolating animals with signs at intake until they are judged low risk to the population.
How do you set up a safe quarantine area at home?
Prepare the area before the newcomer enters the home. The goal is to prevent direct contact, contaminated objects, and hand- or clothing-borne transfer while keeping care practical.
- Choose a closed room. Use a bathroom, laundry room, spare bedroom, or another space with a door. If no room is available, use a secure temporary enclosure sized for the species and positioned so resident animals cannot touch noses through the barrier.
- Assign separate equipment. Provide dedicated food and water bowls, litter equipment for cats, bedding, toys, waste bags, and cleaning tools. Do not rotate these items among animals during the separation period.
- Control the order of care. Handle resident pets first, then the quarantined pet last. Wash hands after contact and change clothing if it has been contaminated by feces, vomit, respiratory secretions, or visibly soiled bedding.
- Manage waste immediately. Keep feces, vomit, nasal or eye discharge, and used litter away from resident pets. Dispose of waste without carrying contaminated items through areas where other animals eat or sleep.
- Book an intake examination. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (2022) says a comprehensive examination is ideally performed within 24 hours of intake. Vaccination and parasite prevention are typically addressed as part of that initial assessment.
- Keep records. Write down the adoption date, shelter information, vaccination dates, medications, appetite, stool quality, and any signs. A simple log helps the veterinarian determine whether the clock should continue or restart.
A portable pet playpen may be useful as a temporary barrier when a separate room is impossible, but it is not a substitute for a closed door, dedicated supplies, cleaning controls, or veterinary direction.
What should you monitor during quarantine?
Check the new pet at least twice daily. Observe both the animal and the environment, because changes in appetite or stool can precede more obvious illness.

- Energy, alertness, and willingness to move
- Stool consistency, diarrhea, or blood
- Vomiting or repeated retching
- Coughing, sneezing, or noisy breathing
- Eye or nasal discharge
- Possible fever, shivering, or a marked change in body temperature or behavior
- Hair loss, crusts, circular lesions, or other skin changes
Call a veterinarian promptly if any of these signs appear, particularly breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, severe lethargy, or signs in a very young or unvaccinated animal. Do not wait for the planned date to arrive. Keep the pet isolated while you obtain instructions, because the appropriate endpoint may depend on examination, testing, treatment, or the likely pathogen.
When is 14 days not enough?
Extend separation when the animal had direct contact with a confirmed or suspected contagious case, when a new exposure occurs, when symptoms develop, or when a veterinarian identifies an organism with a longer incubation or shedding period. University of Florida guidance states that a new exposure restarts the quarantine clock.

In the American Animal Hospital Association’s 2022 outbreak guidance, high-risk dogs remain in segregated housing through the anticipated incubation period, with retesting 10–14 days later in the cited protocol. The veterinarian may also require treatment, repeat examinations, or a longer no-contact period after signs resolve.
Should dogs and cats follow different plans?
The separation principle is the same, but the likely diseases and resident-pet risks differ. For dogs, parvovirus, distemper, and contagious respiratory infections are important considerations. For cats, panleukopenia, herpesvirus, calicivirus, and ringworm influence the monitoring window. A dog and cat should not be allowed to share bowls, bedding, litter tools, or grooming items merely because they are different species; contaminated objects can still move infection through a home.

Resident vulnerability changes the practical decision. A household with a healthy, fully vaccinated adult may accept a different level of residual risk than one with a puppy, kitten, elderly pet, immunocompromised animal, or animal whose vaccinations are overdue. Tell the veterinarian about every resident and their vaccination status so the plan reflects the most vulnerable animal, not just the newcomer.
How do you know when it is safe to end separation?
End routine separation only when all of the following are true:
- The planned interval has been completed without a new exposure.
- The new pet has remained free of concerning signs.
- The shelter has not reported a disease concern that changes the plan.
- The veterinarian has no reason to extend isolation or request additional testing.
Then begin introductions gradually rather than releasing the animals together immediately. Start with controlled, brief contact and retreat if either animal shows fear, aggression, coughing, or other concerning behavior. Behavioral introductions are separate from infection control: a pet can be medically cleared yet still need a slow, supervised relationship-building process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do shelter quarantine rules apply to your household?
Not automatically. Shelter and transport rules vary by jurisdiction, facility resources, and disease prevalence. Animal Welfare Victoria’s June 2022 code, for example, uses an eight-day quarantine before rehoming under the cited state rules and requires isolation with veterinary supervision for suspected infectious disease.

For an adopter, the household endpoint should be based on clinical signs, exposure history, vaccination information, resident-pet vulnerability, and the veterinarian’s plan. Ask the shelter what illnesses have occurred recently, whether the pet was housed with a contagious animal, which vaccines were given and when, and whether any follow-up testing is pending. Those answers can justify a longer or more specific plan than the facility’s minimum release rule.
What mistakes make quarantine fail?
- Allowing a “quick hello” at the door: nose-to-nose contact can defeat the barrier you are trying to maintain.
- Sharing cleaning tools or bowls: objects can carry fecal, respiratory, or skin contamination between rooms.
- Handling the newcomer first: care order should run from resident animals to the quarantined pet, not the reverse.
- Ending the period after a new exposure: the clock must be reconsidered and may restart.
- Ignoring mild signs: early sneezing, loose stool, reduced appetite, or a small skin lesion deserves a veterinary question rather than dismissal.
- Treating quarantine as a substitute for an examination: the intake visit identifies problems that a calendar cannot.
The safest plan is therefore both calendar-based and condition-based: maintain separation for the default interval, watch twice daily, and let exposure or illness override the date.

Should a vaccinated resident dog still be kept away from a new shelter dog?
Usually, yes, while the newcomer’s exposure history is being clarified. Vaccination can reduce the resident dog’s risk but does not eliminate every infection or protect against all organisms, so the shelter record and veterinarian’s assessment still matter.
Can I quarantine a rescue cat in a bedroom with my own clothes and furniture?
You can use a bedroom if you can keep the door closed and prevent shared contact with resident animals. Keep the cat’s litter, bowls, bedding, and cleaning supplies dedicated to that room, and change or wash contaminated clothing before handling other pets.
What information should I request from the shelter before bringing the pet home?
Ask about recent illness in the facility, known contact with contagious animals, vaccination dates, parasite treatment, medications, and any pending tests. Also ask whether the animal had vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, discharge, or skin problems during its stay.
Can a shelter pet spread infection before showing symptoms?
Yes. Incubation means an animal may look normal while an infection is developing, which is why separation is recommended even for an apparently healthy newcomer. Exposure to feces, respiratory secretions, or contaminated equipment can create risk before obvious illness appears.

When should I call the veterinarian instead of waiting for the quarantine period to end?
Call as soon as the pet has breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, marked lethargy, fever, eye or nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, or skin lesions. A veterinarian can determine whether isolation, treatment, testing, or a longer separation period is needed.
