How Many Ants Are on Earth? Researchers Estimate About 20 Quadrillion

Researchers estimated 19.8 × 10^15 ants on Earth, or about 20 quadrillion. The figure combines ecological sampling and extrapolation, with important habitat data gaps.

Researchers estimate that about 20 quadrillion ants are alive on Earth at a given time. That is 19.8 × 1015 ants, with a reported uncertainty of ±5 × 1015—a scientific estimate built from ecological sampling and extrapolation, not a count of every ant.

What does “20 quadrillion” mean?

A quadrillion is 1015, or 1 followed by 15 zeroes. The estimate therefore corresponds to about 19,800,000,000,000,000 ants. The figure comes from a 2022 peer-reviewed study by Patrick Schultheiss and coauthors in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The authors integrated data from 489 studies spanning all continents and major biomes. Their estimate of 19.8 × 1015 ants has a reported uncertainty of ±5 × 1015; that uncertainty is not a hard minimum-to-maximum count.

How did researchers estimate the ant population?

The researchers brought together ecological studies and scaled their observations to broader areas and habitats. Their total includes estimates for ants living on the ground or in leaf litter (epigaeic ants), ants living in trees (arboreal ants), and ants that are not foraging.

Ground-based sampling and extrapolation

Area-based sampling of leaf litter can provide estimates of ant abundance in a sampled area. Researchers then use biome-level extrapolation to estimate populations across larger regions. This approach supports estimates of density, but it depends on how well the sampled locations represent the habitats being extrapolated.

Why pitfall traps are different

Pitfall traps capture ants moving through an area. They measure activity density—the number caught in relation to activity and sampling effort—not a direct count of how many ants live in a given area. Treating pitfall-trap results as interchangeable with area-based density estimates would misrepresent what those studies measured.

Why the estimate is incomplete

The study’s total is conservative, but it is not a complete census. The authors identify data gaps in boreal forests, mangroves, and subterranean habitats, along with ant groups not represented in the available data. They also used a cautious estimate for ants that are not foraging. These limitations mean the global total remains an estimate shaped by both the available samples and the assumptions used to extend them.

What the study says about ant biomass

The authors separately estimated ant biomass at 12.3 ± 3.1 megatons of dry carbon. On that dry-carbon basis, they report that ants exceed the combined biomass of wild birds and mammals and amount to about 20% of human dry biomass. This is a comparison of dry carbon biomass, not a claim about the animals’ total wet weight.
