A female goldfish typically lays a few thousand eggs in one spawning event—often around 2,000–4,000, though the count varies with the fish and conditions. Those eggs are not a count of surviving babies: some are never fertilized, and adult goldfish may eat eggs and newly hatched fry.
How many eggs does a goldfish lay at once?
Goldfish are egg layers. A female scatters sticky eggs onto plants or other submerged surfaces, and a male fertilizes them externally. Aquarium and aquaculture sources commonly report about 2,000–3,000 eggs per female, while a species account gives a typical range of 2,000–4,000 eggs per spawning event. A 30-gram female breeder produced about 3,000 eggs in Philippine Department of Agriculture NFRDI training material.
There is no single count that fits every fish. Size and breeding conditions matter, and published figures reflect different fish and husbandry contexts. For example, a Jamaica Ministry of Agriculture brochure gives approximately 500–1,000 eggs per spawn; that is a cited example, not a universal average.
Large females and repeat batches
Large females can produce far more than a typical aquarium clutch. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports more than 200,000 eggs from large females, and the Animal Diversity Web species account records a maximum of 380,000. These exceptional figures should not be confused with the usual number laid in one aquarium spawning event.

How long do goldfish eggs take to hatch?
Hatching commonly takes a few days. OATA says successful eggs hatch in about three days, and the Invasive Species Centre gives a common range of 2–7 days, with hatching possible in 48 hours in warm water. Animal Diversity Web reports a broader range of 2–9 days. Temperature and conditions affect timing, so these are ranges rather than a guaranteed schedule.
How many goldfish babies will survive?
The number of eggs is not the number of surviving fish. Some eggs are unfertilized or fail to hatch; eggs and fry may also be eaten. The Invasive Species Centre notes that most eggs do not hatch or reach adulthood. Goldfish provide no parental care and may eat their own eggs and young.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University reports an 80–90% hatch rate under ideal conditions. That figure is an ideal-condition result, not a prediction for a home aquarium, and hatching does not mean every fry will survive to adulthood.

What should you do if your goldfish lays eggs?
- Separate the eggs from adult fish. After spawning, remove the adults from the breeding area, or move the egg-bearing plants, net, or spawning mop to a separate hatching container. OATA advises removing plants or a spawning mop because goldfish are notorious for eating eggs and fry.
- Keep the eggs in stable conditions. Maintain stable water quality and temperature in the hatching container while the eggs develop. Hatching time varies with conditions, so do not assume every egg will hatch on the same day.
- Expect losses. Some eggs may not be fertilized or hatch, and newly hatched fry are not guaranteed to reach adulthood. A spawning mop can provide a removable surface for eggs, but it does not ensure a particular hatch or survival rate.
