Why do some sources say 1,400 coral reef fish species?
The Reef Authority’s public-facing animals page gives a general figure of 1,625 fish species, including 1,400 coral reef fish species. The more recent 2024 Outlook Report specifies approximately 1,625 bony fish species in the Region and classifies 1,468 as coral reef species.
These are differently worded classifications from different publications. When explaining the report’s figures, use its stated 1,468 subset and name the 2024 Outlook Report rather than treating the two subset figures as interchangeable.

Does 1,625 mean individual fish?
No. The 1,625 figure counts different species, not individual fish alive at a particular time. It is a biodiversity tally, not a census of every fish in the Region.
The Reef Authority describes fish across habitats from intertidal areas to the open ocean. Because the figure covers the broader Reef Region, it should not be described as a count of species living exclusively on coral reefs.

Why is the number approximate?
The Reef Authority uses approximate wording for the total, and notes that substantial information and species remain to be discovered. The tally should therefore be attributed and described as approximate, not as a real-time or immutable count.
