How Many Litter Boxes Do You Need for One or More Cats?

Start with one litter box per cat, plus one extra, then make sure every box is large enough, easy to reach, clean, and placed where cats can use it safely.

A widely used starting point is one litter box per cat, plus one extra: two boxes for one cat, three for two cats, and four for three. It is a practical guideline, not a strict requirement for every home. The boxes also need to be in places each cat can reach and use without being crowded, blocked, or intimidated.

How many litter boxes should you provide?

Number of cats Common starting recommendation
1 2 boxes
2 3 boxes
3 4 boxes
4 5 boxes

The cats-plus-one guideline is given by Cornell Feline Health Center, ASPCA, and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. The joint AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline calls it a historical rule of thumb, not an absolute requirement. AAHA/AAFP also describes an alternative: one box for each known social group, plus one. That may be relevant in a home where cats form distinct groups, but the standard cats-plus-one count is a straightforward place to begin.

Does each box need to be in a different place?

Where boxes are located matters alongside how many there are. Several boxes clustered together may not offer meaningful alternatives if a cat cannot comfortably reach that area or another pet can control access.

  • Place boxes in separate, quiet, accessible locations rather than a busy or intimidating spot.
  • In a multistory home, consider providing a box on each level. This is especially useful for a cat that has difficulty with stairs.
  • Avoid locations where a cat could be cornered or blocked, including spots beside noisy appliances or near a dog’s food and water.
  • Keep boxes away from feeding areas.

These placement recommendations are consistent with Cornell and ASPCA guidance. Choose locations that give each cat a usable route in and out.

What makes a box usable for your cat?

Size

A cat should be able to enter, turn around, and dig comfortably. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guideline recommends a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the tip of the tail. The AAFP/ISFM guideline uses a different measurement reference—nose to the base of the tail—in its size guidance, so check which measurement a recommendation uses before comparing dimensions.

The AAFP/ISFM guideline reports that one study found adult cats preferred a 34 × 15 inch (86 × 39 cm) box over a smaller one. That is a study finding, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that every cat will prefer that size.

Entry and sides

Kittens, older cats, and cats with mobility problems may find a box with low sides easier to enter, according to Cornell. Larger cats may need more interior room. A low entrance with higher sides elsewhere can be worth considering when a cat needs easy entry but scatters litter or urinates high; assess the individual cat rather than assuming one design will suit all.

Covered or open

Cornell notes that many cats prefer uncovered boxes. An open box allows odors to escape and gives the cat a wider view. Preferences vary, so if a cat avoids a covered box, try an uncovered option.

Litter and cleanliness

Cornell says most cats prefer unscented, finer-textured litter. With clumping litter, it recommends removing clumps and feces daily and adding clean litter as needed. ASPCA advises scooping solid waste at least once a day; its general cat-care guidance recommends washing and refilling boxes at least weekly, while noting that full litter changes can be less frequent with clumping litter. Follow the litter product’s directions and pay attention to whether your cat continues to use the box.

What if a cat still eliminates outside the box?

Adding a box may help if access or availability is the problem, but house-soiling can also be associated with a medical condition, aversion to the box or litter, a preferred location, or conflict with another pet. Box count alone cannot identify the cause.

Cornell and ASPCA advise veterinary assessment when a cat consistently eliminates outside the box, beginning by ruling out medical problems. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the change is sudden or persistent, or if your cat seems ill or has difficulty urinating.
