A study of the genera Sitana and Sarada reconstructs that evolutionary history; it does not document a recent migration of lizards across the country.
What “spread out” means in this study
Fan-throated lizards are a group of lizards in the genera Sitana and Sarada, found across the Indian subcontinent and associated with semi-arid environments. The phrase “spread out” is a simple way to describe their broad distribution, but the study examined how distinct lineages diversified through deep time—not a modern journey from one part of India to another.

V. Deepak and Praveen Karanth used genetic evidence, morphology, fossil calibrations and geographic information to reconstruct the group’s evolutionary relationships. Their findings support a link between changing monsoon conditions, changing habitats and diversification, while leaving open how much any one factor contributed. The study’s abstract and bibliographic record and its publisher abstract describe the analysis.

How the researchers reconstructed the lizards’ history
The researchers sampled fan-throated lizards at 107 localities across their range and used molecular species delimitation to identify 15 species, including six putative species. Thirteen of the 15 were distinguishable by morphology. The other two were sister species that looked alike and had a small area of distributional overlap.

To estimate when lineages diverged, the team built a dated evolutionary tree calibrated with five fossils. A contemporaneous Scroll report said researchers compared physical traits in 465 individuals and sequenced genes from more than 100. Those individual counts come from the report; the study abstract itself gives the locality count and describes the molecular and morphological work.
When diversification increased—and how monsoons may fit
| Period in the study’s reconstruction | What the researchers report | Proposed climate and habitat context |
|---|---|---|
| About 18 million years ago | The estimated beginning of lineage diversification. | The authors relate this interval to the establishment of a monsoon climate. |
| After 11 million years ago | The study’s abstract reports higher lineage diversification. | The authors associate the later increase with stronger monsoon conditions and the onset of aridification. |
| About 8–5 million years ago | The Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science highlights substantial diversification in this interval. | Its summary describes a shift toward more seasonal rainfall and open grassland habitat. |
The time windows are not identical claims: the paper’s abstract describes a higher diversification rate after 11 million years ago, while the Centre for Ecological Sciences summary emphasizes substantial diversification about 8–5 million years ago. Both frame the pattern in relation to increasingly seasonal conditions and more open habitat.

- For the crowd: children over 3 years old; dinosaur animal lovers, collectors owners
- Material: Vinyl Glue, 12 small lizards installed
- Purposes: training children awareness of the natural world of animals, children knowledge map aids, decorative furnishings, gifts.
- Size: about 5-8cm
The authors propose that seasonal climate changes helped shift landscapes from forest toward open habitats, creating opportunities for populations to diverge. This is an interpretation of a dated evolutionary pattern, not an experiment showing that monsoons alone caused speciation. The study does not supply a rainfall total that would quantify the climate change for this account.
Why so many of the identified species are peninsular
Thirteen of the 15 delimited species were found in peninsular India. The authors suggest the region’s varied landscapes may help explain this concentration. Rivers, hills, valleys and remaining forest patches can act as barriers that separate populations, but the available study summaries do not measure the independent effect of each feature.

- This Lizard has excellent detail and craftsmanship
- Great home desk garden decoration. Also a great gift for reptile lover
- Let people know lizard , bring happiness to everyone
The researchers also point to Otocryptis, a species-poor sister lineage associated today with forested areas. Comparing that forest-associated lineage with the semi-arid and open-habitat associations of fan-throated lizards offers context for how habitat shifts could matter, but does not by itself establish a single route or cause for the group’s distribution.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Supported: The sampled lizards form a diverse group; the study delimited 15 species and reconstructed diversification beginning roughly 18 million years ago.
- Supported as the authors’ interpretation: Monsoon seasonality, increasing aridity, habitat change and geographic barriers may have helped shape diversification.
- Not established: That monsoons alone caused the species to arise, or that the study tracked a recent countrywide dispersal event.
- Not quantified in the available summaries: The separate contribution of individual rivers, hills, valleys or forest remnants, or a specific rainfall change.
