There is no reliable single price for owning an “expensive dog.” The purchase or adoption fee is only the beginning: food, veterinary care, preventive medication, grooming, training and paid care can add up year after year, while illness or injury can create costs that are hard to predict. The useful answer is a budget built around a particular dog, household and location—not one lifetime figure presented as a universal forecast.

What “expensive dog” can mean

“Expensive” might describe a high purchase price, a large dog that eats more and needs larger equipment, a coat that requires regular professional grooming, or a dog whose health needs call for extra veterinary care. Those are different cost drivers. A dog with a high acquisition fee is not automatically the most expensive to care for, and a low-cost adoption does not make ongoing care inexpensive.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) describes purchase price as an initial expense that varies by breed and source. After that, owners may pay for food, routine and preventive veterinary care, supplies, grooming, training, licensing, boarding, pet sitting, walking or daycare. Which expenses apply depends on the dog and the household. Local prices and the amount of paid help an owner uses matter too.

For that reason, a useful comparison separates the one-time cost of acquiring a dog from recurring expenses and possible unexpected costs. It also distinguishes estimates with different assumptions. Published totals are not automatically comparable: one may include more kinds of care, cover a different lifespan or come from a different year than another.

What published cost estimates say—and what they do not

Several figures are often cited, but none establishes a current, representative U.S. average for owning an expensive dog. The table preserves each estimate’s stated scope so the numbers are not mistaken for current quotes or combined into a new total.

Estimate What it covers or assumes How to interpret it
$23,410 average projected lifetime cost Projection by Kelly Giffear and Brittany Scott, as summarized by the American Kennel Club (AKC); the AKC account says training classes were not included. A projection reported by AKC, not an inflation-adjusted current national average.
First-year averages: small $2,674; medium $2,889; large $3,239; giant $3,536 Figures by Giffear and Scott, as summarized by AKC. The veterinary estimates included lab work and one serious illness; training classes were excluded. Useful for seeing that size can affect an estimate, but the stated assumptions and exclusions matter. It is not a live price quote.
Lifetime costs: small $15,051; medium $15,782; large $14,480 AKC attributes these figures to Money and pairs them with assumed average life expectancies of 15, 13 and 10 years, respectively. A secondary attribution with different lifespan assumptions by size; do not compare it as if it used the same method as every other estimate.
$17,650 to more than $90,000 A broad lifetime-cost range AKC attributes to Forbes when a wider array of possible costs and services is included. A secondary report of Forbes, not an independently verified estimate here; the breadth signals how much included services can change a total.
2004 survey: $2,127 one-time and $2,489 annual average spending AKC survey summary based on two weeks of responses in July 2004 from 1,001 voluntary respondents. Historical context only. AKC says self-selected recruitment makes the results anecdotal and not guaranteed to represent dog-owning households.

The differences between these totals do not show that one dog will cost a particular amount or that one source is necessarily wrong. The figures have different scopes and methods; the 2004 survey is also old and self-selected. None should be treated as updated for 2026. The AVMA offers guidance on the kinds of expenses owners may face, but it does not give a current universal dollar total.

Which costs belong in your budget?

Start by listing expenses under three headings: setup, recurring care and contingencies. This avoids the common mistake of comparing an acquisition fee with a figure that includes years of food and veterinary care.

One-time and early expenses

A new dog may need an initial veterinary exam, vaccines, a microchip, a spay or neuter procedure where applicable, and basic supplies. A crate is one example of an upfront purchase, but its size and style should suit the individual dog; not every dog needs the same setup. Puppy owners may also consider puppy kindergarten. AKC’s puppy budget lists a purebred puppy purchase estimate, a shelter adoption fee and these types of early expenses, but its ranges are estimates collected from dog professionals and can vary widely by geography, dog and supplier.

Acquisition is worth recording separately even if it is a major expense. A breeder purchase and a shelter or rescue adoption are different routes, and their fees do not tell you what routine care will cost later. When comparing dogs, ask what care has already been provided and what will still need to be arranged; do not assume the acquisition price answers either question.

Recurring expenses

Build an annual estimate for the costs you expect to pay repeatedly. Depending on the dog and your arrangements, that can include:

  • Food and treats, with the amount and type based on the dog’s needs.
  • Routine veterinary exams, vaccines and preventive medications.
  • Grooming, including any professional coat care you plan to use.
  • Licensing, toys, replacement supplies and training.
  • Boarding, pet sitting, dog walking or daycare when your schedule requires paid care.

These categories do not apply equally to every household. One owner may groom a dog at home and arrange care with family; another may pay for recurring grooming and daycare. AKC provides estimated ranges for many categories, but without a location-specific quote those ranges are a starting point, not a promise of what a local provider will charge.

Variable and unexpected expenses

Routine care is not the whole veterinary budget. Illness, injury, emergency treatment, medication or a special diet may add costs beyond ordinary visits. The AVMA includes emergency medical treatment among possible expenses. A dog’s age, health, size and breed-related needs can affect planning, but they do not guarantee a fixed bill or make every dog of a given breed equally costly.

Plan for uncertainty in a way that fits your finances. The AVMA says, “Pet health insurance is available and can help defray unexpected expenses resulting from illness or injury.” Insurance is one approach, not a guarantee that every bill will be paid. Policy terms vary, so compare coverage and consider how you would handle deductibles and expenses outside coverage. If you do not use insurance, decide how you would meet an unexpected bill before one arises.

How size, care needs and location change the comparison

There is no single axis that identifies the “most expensive” dog. Compare the likely demands of the individual dog and the services you will actually use, rather than relying on a breed label or purchase price.

  • Size and equipment: Larger dogs generally use more food and larger supplies. Their equipment dimensions, transport arrangements and boarding needs may also affect costs. A small, medium, large and giant dog were assigned different first-year estimates in the Giffear and Scott figures summarized by AKC, but those historical estimates do not set a price for a specific dog today.
  • Grooming: Coat care and the choice to use professional services can add recurring expenses. Ask what routine care a dog needs and price the services you expect to use locally.
  • Health and age: Routine veterinary care belongs in every budget, while a health condition or an emergency can add costs. Consider the dog’s known needs without treating a breed as a promise of a particular medical outcome.
  • Household schedule: Boarding, sitting, walking and daycare depend partly on the owner’s work and travel arrangements. Include the care you are likely to pay for, rather than assuming it is an unavoidable cost for every owner.
  • Geography and choices: Veterinary, grooming, boarding and other service prices vary by location. The level and type of care selected also matter, so a national estimate may be a poor match for a household’s local budget.

When comparing two dogs, write down these factors side by side: acquisition route and fee; expected food and supply needs; grooming routine; known veterinary needs; and the paid care your schedule may require. Price the categories that can be checked locally, then keep an explicit allowance or plan for costs that cannot be forecast precisely. That produces a more useful comparison than ranking dogs by a single lifetime total.

A practical way to estimate your own annual and lifetime costs

A personal estimate should be transparent about what it includes. Use the same categories for every dog you compare, and separate predictable recurring expenses from irregular ones.

  1. Write down the dog and your assumptions. Note expected size, age, known care needs, where you live and whether you are considering purchase or adoption. Do not treat a breed as a guaranteed health or cost profile.
  2. List setup expenses once. Include the acquisition fee and early veterinary care and supplies that still need to be arranged. Mark items already covered so you do not budget for them twice.
  3. Get local prices for recurring care. Estimate food, routine veterinary visits and preventive medications, grooming, training, licensing and supplies. Add boarding, sitting, walking or daycare only to the extent your household expects to use them.
  4. Make a separate contingency plan. Decide how you would handle illness or injury costs, including emergency care, medication or a special diet. If considering insurance, compare policy terms and identify costs that could remain your responsibility.
  5. Keep estimates distinct from actual costs. Record the period covered and assumptions behind each number. Update your budget when the dog’s needs or local prices change rather than treating an older published estimate as a current quote.

To make a lifetime projection from an annual budget, state the assumed years and which costs are recurring. Do not add the unrelated published lifetime figures above together or average them into a new “typical” total: they do not share one method, scope or set of assumptions. A projection can help with planning, but it cannot predict the timing or cost of an individual dog’s illness or injury.

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The estimates establish that dog ownership involves more than the initial fee, and that size, services and included expenses can change published totals substantially. They do not identify a current average for an “expensive dog,” establish the cost of a particular breed, or substitute for local quotes. The soundest decision is to compare a realistic annual care budget and a plan for unexpected veterinary costs against your household’s resources before bringing a dog home.
