There is no single daily portion that suits every Dachshund. The right amount depends on the dog’s age, healthy weight and body condition, activity, neuter status, health, and the calories in its food. As a rough starting example for adult dry food, a veterinary-authored guide suggests 80–110 g daily for a 4–5 kg miniature and 150–230 g for a 7–14 kg standard, divided into two meals. Use your food’s own feeding guide, weigh portions, and adjust with your veterinarian based on your dog’s condition and weight trend.
Adult Dachshund dry-food portions: rough starting examples
Vets Love Pets, an Australian veterinary-authored guide accessed on October 7, 2026, gives these approximate daily amounts for adult dogs:
| Example size and weight | Dry food per day | Suggested meals |
|---|---|---|
| Miniature, 4–5 kg | 80–110 g | Two |
| Standard, 7–14 kg | 150–230 g | Two |
These are starting ranges, not prescriptions, and they do not cover every weight, age, activity level, or medical situation. The guide says to consider the food’s calorie density, body condition, and package directions. Grams of one food are not nutritionally equivalent to grams of another. Do not convert the ranges to cups unless you know the product’s calories per gram and the weight of a measured cup. The figures apply to dry food, not automatically to wet or mixed diets. Read the Vets Love Pets feeding guide.
Why size labels don’t determine a portion
Miniature and standard are size categories, not feeding calculations or individual ideal-weight targets. The Dachshund Club of America standard describes miniatures as 11 lb or under at 12 months or older and says standards usually weigh 16–32 lb. Those are U.S. show-size descriptions, not a guide to how much a particular dog should eat. See the Dachshund Club of America breed standard.

Scale weight alone is not enough to judge whether a Dachshund is at a healthy weight. Dachshund Health UK advises assessing body condition as well as weight. Its reported 2015 survey medians—5.4 kg for Mini Smooth, 5.5 kg for Mini Long, 5.5 kg for Mini Wire, 9.5 kg for Smooth, 12.6 kg for Long, and 11.2 kg for Wire—include dogs of all ages, including puppies. They are descriptive survey figures, not adult ideal weights. Read Dachshund Health UK’s weight and diet guidance.
What changes how much your Dachshund needs?
- Age: Puppies have different energy needs from adults, and their food and portions should be appropriate for growth.
- Body condition and weight trend: A dog gaining or losing weight may need a portion adjustment; consider the trend rather than a single weigh-in.
- Food calories: Different foods provide different amounts of energy per gram or serving, so follow the directions for the specific product.
- Activity and reproductive status: These can affect energy needs and the amount that maintains a healthy condition.
- Health: Illness or special dietary needs can change what and how much a dog should eat; get veterinary advice before making a weight-loss plan.
Merck Veterinary Manual lists general maintenance-energy starting multipliers for dogs: 1.8 × resting energy requirement (RER) for healthy intact adults, 1.6 × RER for neutered adults, and 1.4 × RER for dogs prone to obesity. For healthy puppies, it lists 3 × RER under four months and 2 × RER over four months. These are general dog estimates, not Dachshund-specific feeding amounts. Merck cautions that calculated intake is only a starting point and may need adjustment based on the individual animal’s response. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s guidance on canine and feline obesity.

How to set and monitor your dog’s portion
- Start with the food label. Use the feeding guide for your dog’s specific food as an initial reference, taking age and weight into account. The adult dry-food ranges above are examples, not a replacement for those directions.
- Weigh the food. Use a kitchen scale to measure each portion rather than estimating by eye. Include treats and other calories in the day’s total.
- Offer scheduled meals. The Dachshund Club of America recommends scheduled meals rather than free feeding. Its guidance also notes that Dachshunds can become overweight and recommends discussing an appropriate diet with your veterinarian. See the club’s feeding guidance.
- Track the trend. Monitor body condition and weight over time. The Vets Love Pets guide suggests reviewing the trend over four to six weeks; any changes should be gradual and based on what you observe.
- Ask your veterinarian to individualize the amount. Seek a tailored plan if your dog is overweight, has a health condition, is growing, or has special dietary needs. Do not impose a weight-loss plan without veterinary guidance when disease or special needs are involved.
Why keeping a Dachshund lean matters
The Dachshund Club of America cautions against excess weight given the breed’s long back. Dr. Jack Ayerbe OAM, a veterinarian and Vets Love Pets partner, emphasizes maintaining a lean condition in the guide: “The single most important thing you can do for a dachshund’s long-term health is keep them lean. I know it sounds simple, but IVDD risk drops meaningfully when the weight is right. If your sausage dog is getting rounder, act sooner rather than later. It is much easier to adjust 200 g than to manage a disc injury.” This is the veterinarian’s attributed advice; it does not mean a particular portion guarantees weight loss or prevents disc disease.
